Bharathiar University, established in February 1982 in Coimbatore by the Government of Tamil Nadu, originated as the former Postgraduate Centre of the University of Madras. Recognized by the University Grants Commission in 1985, the university spans a sprawling 1,000-acre campus near the picturesque Maruthamalai Hills, located 15 km from Coimbatore. The university comprises 39 departments, offering 54 postgraduate and Ph.D. programs, and affiliates more than 140 colleges. It has been awarded an 'A++' accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and ranks 15ᵗʰ among universities and 24ᵗʰ overall in the Ministry of Education's NIRF 2022 rankings. Additionally, the DRDO-BU Centre for Life Sciences, a collaborative initiative with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Government of Tamil Nadu, serves as a hub for advanced research in life sciences.
Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field, merging biology with computer and information sciences, crucial for managing large data sets like human genome to aid drug discovery. Bharathiar University launched India's first postgraduate bioinformatics course in 2001, later upgrading to offer M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs in 2005. Students are now pursuing doctoral studies in countries such as US, UK, Germany, South Korea, and Singapore. Our department have facilities include GPU Servers, CPU Servers, Discovery Studio, Strand NGS software. The department focuses on research areas like Advanced biological Sciences, Drug Delivery, Computational Biology, and Health Informatics, supported by various national and international agencies.
