About

M.A.M.A. (Mother Artists Making Art), a collaborative group of artists who were also new mothers, was formed in 1998. Our backgrounds are in video, performance, installation, writing, and photography. We came together to support each other in salvaging, theorizing, and representing through artworks our experience of being mothers, especially in teasing out those experiences which are invisible or taboo in terms of the norm. In our first three years of collaboration we focused on breastfeeding as experience and metaphor for mothering. Our interests have evolved as our children have grown.

The history of M.A.M.A. is situated in the rich history of feminist collaboration. Our aim has been to give voice to the unarticulated experiences of mothering and to send out subtle dissenting signals that have the possibility of spawning models that could turn our understanding upside down.
