This study was conducted to identify the educational effects of a blended e-learning program for graduating nursing students on self-efficacy, problem solving, and psychomotor skills for core basic nursing skills. A one-group pretest/posttest quasi-experimental design was used with 79 nursing students in Korea. The subjects took a conventional 2-week lecture-based practical course, together with spending an average of 60 minutes at least twice a week during 2 weeks on the self-guided e-learning content for basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation using Mosby's Nursing Skills database. Self- and examiner-reported data were collected between September and November 2014 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t test, and Pearson correlation. The results showed that subjects who received blended e-learning education had improved problem-solving abilities (t = 2.654) and self-efficacy for nursing practice related to cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation (t = 3.426). There was also an 80% to 90% rate of excellent postintervention performance for the majority of psychomotor skills, but the location of chest compressions, compression rate per minute, artificial respiration, and verification of patient outcome still showed low levels of performance. In conclusion, blended E-learning, which allows self-directed repetitive learning, may be more effective in enhancing nursing competencies than conventional practice education.

This text gives a reasoned overview of a number of essentialmental health nursing skills including the development of the therapeuticrelationship, the importance of effective communication, and the fundamentalaspects of assessing, planning and delivering care.

Aimed primarily at helping the nursing student develop essentialskills specific to caring in the mental health environment, the authorssucceed in engaging the reader through a relatively accessible writing style,structured activities, vignettes, and reflective prompts aimed at increasingreaders' self awareness. It is encouraging to note that when definingand exploring the concept of reflective practice, the emphasis is on thepersonal and professional development of the individual instead of reflectionas another assignment dictated by the needs of a specified marking grid.

The text also succeeds in identifying and discussing specificskills such as nursing observation, and the undertaking of specific roles ina nursing team. The inclusion of a section addressing the often neglectedissues of improving the physical health and wellbeing of the identifiedclient group is most welcome.

A criticism of the text would be that, in attempting to provide anin-depth exploration of the complex nature of mental health nursing skills,some areas are addressed somewhat briefly. There is little direction to thereader through, for example, suggestions for further reading. Boundaries tothe therapeutic relationship, including the potential hazards to the clientand the practitioner of over-involvement and so on, should have been includedin more detail; and the application of the identified assessment skills to anestablished assessment framework would have been helpful.

Although the authors state that the book is a 'practicalguide to developing the skills essential for mental health nursing in thetwenty-first century', much of the content can be found in similar textspublished in the twentieth century.

Nevertheless, in spite of its limitations, the book does provide anear-comprehensive overview of essential skills and their application topractice. I would recommend the text to student and newly qualified mentalhealth nurses, while it would also be of use to more experienced nurses as apractical update. Purchasing the book would be money well spent and I willsuggest it to our learning resource centre as a recommended text for thepre-registration programme.
