Permafrost Landscapes in Transition

I am a climate and earth system researcher and lecturer. My motivation is curiosity and fascination for the complex processes that constantly change our planet and maintain a highly sensitive state of balance. We have an enormous impact on this balance, but still understand far too little about it. The Arctic is a unique region that provides us deep insights into past and ongoing climatic changes and their impacts. Having the chance to investigate these processes is fascinating and concerning at the same time.

My Work

My research focuses on the effects of climate warming on Arctic, subarctic, and mountainous regions. I am interested in the physical processes that control heat and water exchange between the skin of the Earth (soil, vegetation, water) and the atmosphere. In particular, my research focuses on permafrost thaw and its effects on ecosystem functions such as water, heat, and mass fluxes. Particularly exciting to me are small-scale processes that have large impacts. I am also interested in applied climate science with a particular focus on the vulnerability of Arctic infrastructure and livelihoods.
