Before indexing begins, we will discuss the details of your project to ensure a mutual understanding of important style and formatting preferences, such as:
style guide (Chicago Manual of Style or in-house style guide)
format (indented or run-in)
alphabetization (word-by-word or letter-by-letter)
formatting of cross-references
formatting of locators
indexing of visual materials, footnotes, endnotes, etc.
any special instructions or length limitations
file format
If this terminology is new to you, have no fear! I can help you understand the options and make recommendations based on the intended audience and type of book being indexed.
We will also discuss pricing for your project and timeline. As a professional indexer, I understand the importance of meeting publishing deadlines and take your proposed timeline very seriously.
As a professional indexer, I use specialized software (Cindex) to build out your index. The indexing process involves:
reading the full text (often multiple times during the course of a project)
building an index structure that reflects the content of your book
adding entries and cross-references to provide multiple access points for readers
editing the index thoroughly
delivering your final index on time in the desired format
My goal is that you will love your final index. Please contact me as soon as possible with any feedback, questions, or concerns about the final index.
Once final payment is received, assignment of rights to the index transfer to you for your use and publication.
