More-than-human Moments via Movement-based Design & Cultural Insights
OzCHI 2024 Workshop
OzCHI 2024 Workshop
9:00 - 9:30 - Welcome, Introductions, and Logistics for the Day
Introductions and an overview of the workshop framework aimed at developing a toolkit that integrates movement-based design and cultural insights for engaging with the more-than-human.
The workshop's outcomes will include a toolkit designed to engage audiences beyond academia in this exciting design space. Both the workshop and the toolkit will be documented in a future academic publication.
All workshop participants are welcome to co-author the toolkit and the paper.
9:30 - 10:40 - Movement, More-than-Human and Cultural Insights Exploration
Participants will engage with a preliminary prototype toolkit and use movement-based design exercises, more-than-human design principles, and cultural insights—such as fables from around the world and nature games from Indigenous Australia—to explore how the toolkit can enable more-than-human moments. The focus will be on ideating, prototyping, and reflecting on this design space and the role of technology in supporting such experiences.
Participants will share their experiences and reflections and begin to synthesise potential themes.
10:40 - 11:00 Coffee Break
11:00 - 12:00 Prototyping More-than-Human Moments
Participants will share a cultural insight of their choice and explore its connection to more-than-human moments. Building on the design strategies and insights from the morning, they will prototype using props and technology components. Through this activity, participants will experiment with and contribute new strategies informed by their cultural insights, movement-based design, and more-than-human design literature, further advancing the intellectual development of the toolkit.
12:00 - 12:30 Keynote and prototype playtest

Originally from Aotearoa/New Zealand, she is Māori from Ngāti Whātua and Ngāpuhi iwi. She uses embodied movements to perform with plants, software, and sensors, in a perceptually challenging infra-red mixed reality. Her vision punctuated by digital augments, she co-composes with the bio-electrical signals of living plants, generating an audio-visual swarm of movement and sound.
12:30 - 13:30 Lunch Break
13:30 - 15:00 - Synthesis of More-than-Human Moments and Toolkit Planning
Participants will share the prototypes and reflections. We will synthesise the feedback and collectively work on the strategies: movement-based design, more-than-human, cultural insights, engagement with more-than-human principles, technology use, and reflections.
15:00 - 15:30 Publication planning and environment set up
Participants will engage in an open conversation to discuss the write-up of the publication and toolkit. We will set up the writing environment, outline the structure, and allocate teams for the writing process.
15:30 - 15:40 Tea Break
15:40 - 16:00 Transport to the museum (ride share) [self-funded]
16:00 - 17:00 Visit to the Museum of Modern Art [Included]
• Self-guided tour through the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. The tour will serve as an extension of the workshop insights in a real-world and historical context to further our understanding.
The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art showcases the social and cultural diversity of the Asia-Pacific region. The work draws on a wealth of cultural expressions and artists, considering knowledge in its many forms. It follows thematic threads such as care for natural and urban environments, along with nuanced approaches to storytelling, materials, and techniques.
17:20 - 19:00 Dinner and Informal Discussions [self-funded]
• Dinner to provide an opportunity for discussions and reflections on the day’s activities.
