About

History

The Moon Township Public Library provides free access to materials and programs appropriate for all ages that meet the educational, informational, technological, and recreational needs of the community, making it a center of lifetime learning.  The Moon Township Library Friends history began in 1980 as the Friends to Establish a Library for Moon and Crescent Townships (FELMAC).  In 1981, Moon Area School District provided library space in two of their elementary schools.  Volunteers served as library staff.  In 1982, FELMAC evolved to become the Moon Township Library Friends and the Library relocated to the Moon Township Municipal Building.  In 1984, the Moon Library outgrew this space and relocated to the basement of the Public Safety Building (with new shelving, carpeting and over 11,000 books).  In 1985, the Moon Library became an official Public Library, with the Moon Township Government's financial support and an appointment of a Board of Trustees.  The Friends continued to advocate and support the Library with whatever needed to be done.

The Library continued to thrive and expand.  From 1985 to 1994, growth included 10 paid employees and the Library was open 30 hours per week, with new programs for infants, toddlers, and school-age children.  The collection expanded to more than 25,000 books.

In 1994, the Library is in need of more space and moved to the Moon Community Service Center in the Cherrington Complex.  The new building features a tutoring room, children's Storytime and craft rooms, meetings rooms, study rooms and larger spaces for the Library's growing collections.  The Moon Township Library Friends remain strong advocates throughout the years for the Moon Library by providing funds for extra needs over and above the Library's operating budget.  In the new Cherrington location, the Moon Township Library Friends now provide building improvement funds for new shelving, furniture and computers.

For close to 45 years, the Moon Township Library Friends have been truly dedicated to the pursuit of free, educational library enrichment for the Moon area and for the region. The heart of the Friends of the Moon Library organization has always been their unwavering support and advocacy for the average citizen to have access to fundamental information and knowledge.  Only when your local Community Library is strong and vital, can your community strive for excellence.

Who we are

Membership in the Moon Township Library Friends is open to all citizens of Moon Township and to any other interested persons or organizations.  There is no application fee nor annual dues.  We do request some information, which is on the Join the Moon Friends page of this website -- which will then be submitted to our gmail account and President.  We have over 20 active, current members but would wholeheartedly welcome you!  We are all ages and interests but our common goal is to promote and advocate for the Moon Library, its programs and its continued growth in the future.  If you would like to help with this goal, and you would be willing to share your efforts, big or small, we would enthusiastically welcome you as our Friend!
