the pisces and virgo axis is the axis of heaven & earth. the thin seam of horizon where earth and universe touch; a portal where liminality finds gentle, tactile presence.
now at the end of pisces season, we approach the cusp of aries season; the (re)birth of the world, of spring, renewal, life.
in turn, we reach our climax, our fullness, the crest of our collective wave, with the beautiful full moon in virgo, taking place at 3am EST. virgo is the grounding between realities; the planting of seeds within the new worlds we are envisioning & birthing into creation. this is the axis of ethereal ritual, of the innermost hum of belonging.
virgo helps us locate & instill boundaries while pisces asks us to soften & dissolve them. virgo brings rootedness & distills piscean dreamscapes into clarity, & shapes piscean illusion into the groundwork of the pathways we walk.
there is a divine orchestration and planning intimately shown through the energy of virgo; the ritual of repetition, the organized chaos that links together every micro & macrocosm on our earth and within our cosmos through pattern, feeling, fractal.
virgos are curators of bonds, helpers of hearts, weavers of the gorgeous earthly & divine tapestry. the virgos in my life are messengers of belonging; deep friendships who cultivate closeness by bringing souls together. their sight is a gift. they carefully choose threads of connection and braid them together with the utmost care and tenderness. if the virgo // pisces axis is felt as a portal, pisces energy is the voice and call reaching to us, asking for our faith as we step, while virgo is the step we take towards and through it.
the rhythm as we continue moving forward.
in tarot, virgo energy is represented by the hermit; a being of patience, introspection, thoroughness. although virgo does so much deep work for the collective, they also remind us to take a step back. that to pour into ourselves is to pour into others; to invest in ourselves is to invest in the world; to know ourselves is to create from infinite possibility something that is unique, tessellated- separate yet intricately entwined in community, ecosystem, & the vast, labyrinth-like network of humanity, nature, spirit, belonging.
virgo is mutable earth; ever-shifting and moving yet ever-present and rooted. ever-dignified in this miracle of existence. the epitome of octavia butler's ”all that you touch you Change. all that you Change Changes you. the only lasting truth is Change. God is Change.”
that there is rootedness in Change.
to honor the beauty of virgo energy through the lens of pisces season is like looking at earth's divinity in detail with love & reverence. we take a step back as the hermit, and gaze from the throne of the high priestess above and between the realms.
she gazes at the ocean & sky kissing at the horizon, witnesses archipelagos & waterways on earth from space. virgo & pisces energy helps us see more deeply a representation of spirit in presence; through roots, trees, oceans, mountains. the connectedness of forests with the pathways in our brain, the ways rivers lead to oceans like our nervous & circulatory systems lead to our head and heart. the ways that we mimic the earth and earth mimics us. the fractals present simply through our existence, our being.
in Verdant Dreams of Olam HaBa, Rebecca Goldschmidt writes about rainbows ”as a brilliant gift that mirror the joy and illusory nature of Adar. the rain soaks the red earth & brings green delight to surrounding mountainsides, forest floors of ferns, cliffsides terraced with endemic & introduced plants alike. tree canopies stretch out after heavy downpours & streams gush into the ocean. the world emerges anew. rainbows reveal a dance between light & water, a portal to the divine only visible from a particular vantage point. [...] rainbows guide us into the unknown without trepidation.”
may we all find courage to step like virgo through these portals with piscean softness, and find faith, presence, and awe as we move through this liminal space into earth's energetic rebirth on the equinox.
special honoring of bubba dora, the pisces matriarch of my family!
images are of the mergui archipelago from space. the archipelago is made up of nearly 800 islands and extensive coral reefs in the southernmost reaches of Burma, along the border of Thailand, in the Andaman sea. largely indigenous populations of the archipelago have helped preserve its high diversity of plants and animals.
on a walk a few months ago with naima, we marveled at the autumnal transition from the bountiful plumage of full, leafy trees to their winter forms. and it was in that moment that i realized it's only when the trees are bare that we see their true selves. it is only when every leaf has fallen away that we see the full intricacies of their strength, support systems, and identity. their scars from lightning, storms, and the passage of time. the interconnectedness between their root systems, branches, & crowns, like witnessing their love, friendship, community.
it is only when we are stripped bare, when everything else falls away, that we start to see this innermost truth of ourselves. sometimes this comes as ego death. sometimes this feels like heartbreak and loss- of life, love, patterns, or ways of being that suddenly change. but in these moments when we are most vulnerable, lonely, or weary, we can look to the trees for guidance. the truth is that we need to let others in. to be vulnerable is to let ourselves be seen through love.
in lenapehoking, we are now deeply encompassed by winter- the anchored stillness of branches stripped bare, the emptied trees, nests, homes. the gentle sharpness of each breath of cold air filling our lungs that feels fresh & crisp, like energy in wait.
now a full lunar cycle since the solstice, we're seeing sunlight slowly return to us & are feeling the deeply rooted anticipation of springtime, life, and nature's rebirth whispering to us from afar. like longing for touch in solitude, yearning for a lover, for warmth & the intimacy of closeness in the coldest months.
the slowly churning energy of cardinal earth capricorn season has been shifting the tectonic plates of our routines & belonging beneath our feet. deeply embedded questions of ambition, stability, compassion, & care have been sent vibrating through our bodies for careful questioning. on the horizon we feel the starlit energy of aquarius season starting to echo over the mountains, as if calling to us through our dreamscapes.
just like the moon returning to her home domain, we are all being asked to return home to ourselves in winter. the cancer full moon asks our hearts what we most yearn for in moments of transition- the ways we can fall more deeply into faith, comfort, & safety during hibernation. the importance of not only returning to our intuition & emotional processing; but of truly letting ourselves witness & FEEL our deepest desires. our most profound, earthshaking thirsts. our deep oceans of love. the ways we care for, nurture & reparent ourselves through heartbreak & change.
and just like the trees surrounding us in capricorn season, i'm thinking of the ways we are firmly rooted in earth yet also stripped bare and exposed in this moment. trees gift us so much; life, oxygen, companionship, protection. but perhaps the greatest honor is to witness the openness with which trees transform & show their vulnerability. it is an honor to witness them at their fullest, when they bring forth fruit and leafy homes for ecosystems of animals and birds. and it is an honor, when every leaf has been shed & fallen away, to bear witness to their truest, innermost, divine core. their essence.
six months ago i journaled that: "to leave the soil and grow
and bloom in the world is a scary thing. but to do so is to be rewarded by the infinite beauty of being seen, deeply, for who i am. to be met by soulmates and kindred with the truest love, the greatest acceptance, the vastness and depth of real trust.to open myself, even in moments of immense sadness and pain, even in moments of memories stirring feelings of unworthiness or fear, is to be visible. is to see the beauty in myself. is to love myself so bravely and fiercely that i open myself to others loving me bravely and fiercely."
intimacy asks for our courage to be vulnerable. trust asks for our gift of visibility. love asks for the devotion to our hearts to be truthful, open. this is sacred.
it is a wholeness, and holiness, only meant for the few. so in the words of @sacredblooming, who deserves to have the honor of seeing you?
in the beautiful, wise, transcendant words of dori midnight:
"Jewish tradition is a tree tradition: our cosmology is mapped onto the body of a tree, one of our names for god is 'holy apple orchard,' and we call the Torah 'a Tree of Life.'
in the zohar, god is a tree & we are the apples, god is also an orchard and we are the trees; they are a horticulturist, and we, the trees. like trees, we are earth bound beings arching towards mystery."
"for in truth a person is called 'a tree of the field,' as it is written, 'the tree of the field is human,' except that the human is an upside-down tree. for a tree's root is sunk below in the earth, but a person's root is above, for the soul is their root, and that is from heaven. and the hands are the branches of the tree, the legs are branches on branches, the body is the trunk.” [Netzach Yisrael 8:27]
"the deep connection with trees in Jewish imagination may have roots in the worship of Asherah, an ancient Canaanite goddexx. tree theology sings throughout Jewish tradition - in rabbinic text, folklore, healing practices, and liturgy.” @dorimidnight
this collage was lovingly inspired by the seven species: pomegranates, olives, figs, wheat, barley, grapes, & dates. (שבעת המינים)
as described by myjewishlearning, "the special significance of the seven species is accentuated by the great kabbalist Rabbi Isaac Luria (Arizal), who attributes the spiritual energies of each fruit to one of the seven lower sefirot (spiritual emanations) that we count during each week of the Omer. their correspondence is according to the order they occur in the Torah verse. the medical properties of the seven species are synchronized with their spiritual energies."
wheat is chesed (kindness), barley is gevura (restraint), grapes are tiferet (beauty), figs are netzach (endurance), pomegranates are hod (majesty & glory), olives are yesod (foundation), & dates are malchut (kingdom).
thank you also to hadar cohen for compiling such a gorgeous guide, with some of my favorites below, of tu b'shevat, trees, & mysticism:

”he shall be like a tree planted by waters, sending forth its roots by a stream: it does not sense the coming of heat, its leaves are ever fresh; it has no care in a year

all of this being said,
reminder that so many of the ecosystem and re-forestation efforts happening in occupied Palestine under guise of environmentalism have been weaponized & used explicitly to displace Palestinian villages, homes, and prevent the return of communities.
chag sameach tu b'shevat!
the taurus & scorpio axis is one of trust. trust is required through any transformation; any life cycles of birth, death, & rebirth. plutonian scorpio emphasizes what our souls must passionately express & birth in our lifetimes, while venusian taurus grounds us by reminding us that we can see and feel spirit, ancestors, & soul as present in everything we connect with on this material plane.
kohenet Rae Abileah writes in ”Verdant Dreams of Olam haBa, the World to Come 5782,” that:
”at the end of this month, we begin to light chanukah candles. this year, light candles as a practiced of illuminating the darkness, calling attention to all that lives just beyond the limited light of the tiny candles. before our eight day festival of lights is over, we transition into tevet. kislev kisses the in-between.
Kislev is derived from the Babylonian month kissilimu. some believe it comes from kesel as in hope-- hope for winter rains-- and other hear kislev & think of the hebrew word kis, 'pocket,' and lev, 'heart.'
whether you're preparing for travels into inner dreamscapes, (em)bracing for winter ahead, or about to set off for faraway places, your journey may be well-supported by a travel altar, a 'pocket of the heart' to tend to your hopes and fears."
the full moon in taurus and powerful lunar eclipse marks the midway point of the hebrew month of kislev; a month of liminal space, mystery, shapeshifting, rebirth. the dark, still waters of scorpio pull us deeper towards what is felt viscerally despite being hidden. we're called to find comfort within discomfort, wisdom within lessons. we stare deep into the water for healing & reflection.
the sister signs of taurus and scorpio together reveal the power of fixed energy; the grounded doers and sharers of visions. the planting of ideas. like trees rooted & intertwined in the swamp marshes, we find our interconnectedness through mutual support, foundations, stability. our life is created in community with the earth, & with each other.
water is life. it gives life and can take it away. scorpio is what must fall away, release, & die in order to fertilize the earth & soil of our bodies and spirit to rebirth & create anew. our bodies are made from water, we are birthed from water. in these moments of deep change, we can look to the chasmic water for the stability we crave; as reconciliation, renewal, regulation.
"the luminous darkness is the place of both death & birth."
the new moon in libra marks the beginning of cheshvan; a month of release. the deep breath at the end of summer & the fruitful harvest before the exhale, rest, & stillness of winter. i love autumn because of the the vibrance, colors, beauty. the way the air grows chilly & fills our lungs, the way we feel the cold, fresh renewal inside of us.
you can tell libra is ruled by venus by the way every tree and leaf adorns itself with new, reinvented beauty. like warming ourselves by a fire and staring deep into the embers, we see the last, brilliant flickers of light and life in every tree branch & meadow around us, before the sunset of the seasons.
libra draws our attention to the scales of balance within ourselves & all of our relationships.
just like the fiery bursts of autumn enveloping us, we have to look inward & ask ourselves what is lighting our inner fire. what embers will we feed, what will keep us warm in the winter months?
as the air grows colder, we inhale the discernment & wisdom of what serves us in this season, so that we can release and exhale what doesn't in the next.
just like air feeds the flame, our personal air--our visions, thoughts, words, & ideas--feeds our soul & inner fire. the hearth of our heart.
what do we need to breathe into the fire to protect it?
what leaves need to be released to preserve our branches, our energy, & our colors for next year?
”like the last moments of life, this month is a time of solitude and inwardness. bitterness itself is an essential part of the palette. just as bitter herbs help us digest a rich meal, the bracing solitude of Cheshvan helps us digest the abundant joy of Tishrei. likewise, getting to know death brings us closer to what is most important in life.
owning our mortality and sitting with the uncomfortable, uncontrollable nature of dying can be a profound spiritual practice for this season. drawing near to death is also drawing close to life.
it is accepting the essential wildness and finitude of our precious beautiful bodies which will eventually decay, as well as our inextricable connection to the untamed natural world." - Rabbi Elliot Kukla in ”Verdant Dreams of Olam haBa, The World to Come 5782”
