Welcome to Monticello High School and the District Large Group Speech Contest! We look forward to having each of you at MHS. Please read the following information and make sure to double check the schedule for any errors.

Please remember there is a suggested donation of $3.00 for each spectator at contest. Let your students and parents know about this request so they are prepared. All other high school activities charge their spectators and the Iowa High School Speech Association believes we have a quality product that is worth paying to see, so we are following the IHSSA recommendation. This donation is only for spectators. There will be a donation table at each entrance of the school for donations.

Masks:

The IHSSA is strongly encouraging students and audiences to wear masks throughout the building. Masks can be taken off during performances and eating. This is to help keep the kids healthy for state contest.

Main Entrance:

Our new entrance to the high school is done. Please use this one for contestants and spectators.

Concessions:

We will be serving a varied menu for breakfast and lunch . We encourage you to have your students and others eat here.

Props & Parking:

Students and props (except big One Act props) should load/unload in front of the school at the circle drive. Bigger props can be brought in through the back door by the auditorium. SCHOOL BUSES DO NOT PARK HERE. Buses will use the circle drive to load and unload students. Bus parking will be by the ball diamonds. A shuttle van will be available for the bus drivers.

Parents may park in the high school parking lot or the middle school parking lot. Please note the middle school doors will NOT be unlocked.

All props will need to be stored in the gym. We ask that bigger props be moved out of the gym as soon as possible. We ask your students to not bring radios (unless for an event), tents, games, etc. The gymnasium is near our Auditorium and Music rooms, and noise travels down this hallway easily.

Main Headquarters:

The main headquarters for contest will be in our high school office. Please check in as soon as you arrive. If you have any substitutions or drops please be sure to let the office know as soon as you arrive. Ratings will be posted in the gym. Contest centers will begin at 8:00 a.m. A coaches’/bus drivers’ lounge will be located in room 375.

Reminder:

Please remember to help keep the hallways quiet. We all know students and spectators become excited and nervous and sound levels increase. Please remind them to be courteous. Thank you! Enjoy your day!

Critique Sheets

Please make sure to bring critique sheets for each of your performing groups. Extras will be available for purchase in the office for .25.

Weather

If bad weather should cause the need for a delay, we will have announcements placed on the local television channels and radio stations, and on our Speech website. If you would like a text, please make sure to contact Kim Carlson with your cell number
