Mountain bike season starts once the weather warms a bit and the trails are dry. Mid-April is the average start date. The first rides are mostly flat to rolling to get everyone comfortably back in the saddle. After a few weeks we add some hills. Generally we split into groups by ability. You can choose how fast or slow you want to go each week.
Hiking can be a year round activity here in Missoula. We tend to have low snow levels in the surrounding hills so just make sure you have some traction and gaiters to keep the snow out of your boots. The larger group hikes usually begin in mid-October when cooler temps and darkness falls early. We've been encouraging year round hiking so come on out.
The winter season will also sometimes bring skiing or snow shoe opportunities.
Traction options for hiking: From micro spikes to Yaktrax there are lots of choices for getting a better grip on icy trails. We've found the kind that work best are the spiked type vs the wrapped wire. For a less expensive and versatile version, you can make your own screw shoes for about $3
Many winters we find a cabin and ski or snow shoe in for a weekend of amazing food and fun.
Ever tried winter camping? It's pretty fun. There may be more in the future.
