I really enjoy the training quests and the mechanics behind them. How the game asks you to try out specific playstyles that force you to get creative and re-learn a fight possibly multiple times. How there are additional supplies to gather or carve from small monsters, similar to the epic hunting quests. This is where MHFU really shines, imo.

These are the main types of quests given in both Single Player and Multiplayer formats. Marked in Red; these quests denote the objective of killing a specified number of a certain monster. This can include several of a Subordinate Monster to up to two of a Boss Monster throughout the duration of the quest. These quests are generally given a 50 minute time limit.

While not focusing on combat, these missions are based around the gathering of items, whether specified or not. This kind of quest can be either a 'freeroam' of 'list' type, denoting the lack of a specific objective, or the requirement to procure a certain item, respectively. These are denoted by the colour green. Freeroam gathering quests allow the player to venture through the environment without restraint, exemplifying them from item restrictions. However, they are still given a 50 minute time limit to spend during this quest. Once finished, they can use a Paw Pass Ticket to end the quest, before the timer runs out (otherwise the quest will automatically end for them). Other specified Gathering Quests, are much more linear in nature. This can include the gathering of herbs or other miscellaneous items found in the local environment. These can also include gathering from the innards of a slain monster (generally a subordinate), or even monster eggs.

Capture quests are similar to hunting quests, in that they focus on the presence of a monster within the area. These only apply to Boss Monsters, which can actually be affected by Pitfall Traps. Denoted by the colours white; these quests involve the weakening and capturing of a Boss Monster, through the use of a Pitfall Trap and either Tranq Bombs or Tranq Shots.

These quests, denoted by the colour of purple, are designed for the compatibility of Online Play only. The nature of these quests varies, as they can be any one of the three types stated above. When Monster Hunter's online service was active, new Event Quests were made available for download. These ranged from killing many of a specific monster (even more so than standard hunting quests), to fighting in the arena against tougher Boss Monsters for rarer items than usual. Since the closure of Capcom's online service, the periodical release of new Event Quests has been discontinued.

In Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for the PSP you are a hunter that needs to kill or capture lots of dragon-like creatures. You can fight alone, or go to the Gathering Hall to hunt with your friends. If single player is more your taste, you'll never have to be truly alone as you can even hire some Felyne Comrades. These are cat-like humanoid creatures that are willing to die for you in the heat of battle with giant monsters. As you travel across snowy mountains, go into deep forests and climb volcanic mountains, you will face tons of different monsters, all eagerly awaiting your challenge.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite has more than 300 quests, so getting bored is never an option. Hunting yields a few options; you can kill monsters, cut their tails and horns off for extra reward, or you can even capture them if you and your team are able to weaken them enough. Each method has it's advantages, but whatever you choose you'll be able to use materials from the monster to make better equipment. The monsters range in size from small, large and HUGE beasts. I say HUGE because some are as big as a mountain. You can jump on their backs to bring them down, or defend a Fortress from them by using cannons, ballistas and the secret dragon-killing weapon: the Dragonator. You can't just win by mashing your way through the missions. To conquer these beasts you'll need skills from the various armor, weapon and decoration combinations - but most of all you'll need teamwork.

Cooperative play involves some fancy teamwork to bring down these large creatures. For instance, while you shoot paralyzing shots from your Bowgun that immobilizes monsters, the other players can buff you up with their Hunting Horn's musical powers, and another player can cut the Wyvern's tail clean off with a sword. This kind of teamwork is essential because the monsters are even tougher than in singleplayer. In solo mode, if you die 3 times then your quest is over. In co-op mode, if the total amount of deaths is three between the players then everyone's quest is over.

Going through these easier quests not only gets you more accustomed to playing the game, but also get you started on gathering all sorts of materials for better weapons and armor. Especially armor. I recommend gathering materials for the Giaprey-set. It might take some grinding and you'll need a Giadrome Hide for the plate, but rest of the set should prove to have nice defence against attacks from the tougher monsters. Just remember to pack Hot Drinks on the quests once you lose the Cold Resistance from Mafumofu Armor.

Much of the game can be played offline through single-player. The majority of the content is in the online section of the game. Only some monsters are found in single-player and the player's rewards are smaller (and less valuable) when they are offline. The goal for players online is not to defeat the most monsters but to reach the highest hunter rank, which is the storyline that is carried out online by non-player characters.

Monster Hunter places the player in the role of an up-and-coming hunter who must accomplish various quests to achieve glory. Armors, weapons, and other items are created from the remains of slain monsters by carving off their horns, scales and bones, as well as from mining for ores in the field. Monster Hunter plays in a similar fashion to Phantasy Star Online allowing the player to team up with up to three other hunters online to take down stronger monsters.

Monster Hunter is played through quests given to the hunter by the Village Elder or the Town Guild. Village Quests can be classified into four categories: hunting, gathering, capture and event. They are also categorized into different levels, ranging from 1 to 8. Higher level quests become available after quests in the previous level are completed. There are three types of quests:

The Event quests are an online-only feature. Every week, a new Event quest is available to hunters of any rank. These quests vary in style and difficulty. Some of the rarer weapons can be made only through Event quest rewards. Event quests are not vital to a hunter's success in the game, but are a useful way to gain experience and to obtain some rare items. Contract fees and time limits vary. All of the quests allow two deaths, but the third death marks the failure of the quest. Regardless of which player actually dies, three deaths will still fail the quest. The only exceptions to this rule are some of the Event quests and all the Training missions, which are failed with just one death.

Hunters can be classified as either Blademasters or Gunners. The Blademaster classification consists of five sub-categories: Sword and Shield, Great Swords, Lances, Hammers, and Dual Swords (Dual Swords were added in the international release and are thus unavailable in the original Japanese release). Blademaster weapons can also be of a certain element, be it fire, water, thunder or dragon as well as status effects such as poison, stun or sleep. Gunners have two choices: Light bowgun, and Heavy Bowgun. Classifications and use of sub-category weapons are not chosen and solidified into a file; hunters are able to choose to use any weapon they want, before the start of any quest or event, as long as they have the proper money and/or supplies to do so.

While everyone else was busy getting ready for the Game Developers Choice Awards, Capcom held a Monster Hunter Freedom Unite event in San Francisco so that we could get hands-on time with one of Japan's hottest-selling games. Staying true to the series but adding new features to make it more single-player friendly, Freedom Unite adds a helpful cat as a sidekick so that you don't have to go on your monster-hunting missions alone. Our hands-on session primarily focused on the multiplayer portion, but after tracking down a giant crab and eventually carving out its parts, it's not hard to see why this game is so popular.

The series may be light on story, but Freedom Unite is connected and takes place after the previous Monster Hunter Freedom 2, so your character will be recognized as the hero that saved the village in the last game. Once again, you'll be given quests, but there are missions that will require you to fetch items, carry eggs back to town, or capture a monster instead of killing it. In our play session, we were after a monster that was lurking in a colder region, so we had to prepare ourselves by grabbing a hot drink before we wandered off. Our character was named Gin and looked like a warrior princess with her furry outfit, head full of feathers, and dual swords. She was quick with her blades, but her range was pathetic, so we really had to get in under the crab to do any sort of damage. Once her blades lost their edge, it was time to pull out the whetstone to sharpen them, and before we knew it, we were back in full swing. Each member of our party had a different weapon type, which balanced our team and made the challenge easier. Since character stats are completely dependent on armor and weapons, the beefed-up gear probably had something to do with it too.

I'm glad you've mentioned the localisation, too - some tremendous attention to detail has gone into the throw-away casual interactions you have with the most minor of characters, from quest-givers to shopkeepers and Felyne chefs. The world of the village and the multiplayer ports are thriving, vibrant places which prevent the game from devolving into a mindless succession of quests, giving you somewhere to actually protect and participate in a way which Freedom Unite's mountain town never quite did. 2351a5e196
