Monomoy WritesHistoryIn 1607, English explorers from the Popham Colony ventured up the Kennebec River, but it wasn’t until 1628 that European settlers established a trading post in the area. The settlement grew over time and was incorporated as Hallowell in 1771. In 1797, Augusta split from Hallowell and became its own town.
Why Augusta? Augusta was chosen as Maine’s capital in 1827 due to its central location, and the Maine State House was completed in 1832. The city thrived as an industrial and commercial hub, benefiting from the Kennebec River’s role in logging and shipping.

- The city was originally named Harrington but was renamed Augusta in August 1797, after Pamela Augusta Dearborn.

- Augusta has a farmer's market, the Buker Community Center, and several organizations, including the Augusta Food Bank and literacy programs.
