IntroductionThe Monomoy Regional High School Theatre Company’s production of 9 To 5, written by Patricia Resnick and with music by Dolly Parton, dazzled audiences during its premiere on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. Packed with energy and charm, the performance exceeded every expectation, showcasing outstanding vocals, polished acting, and captivating stage design. From the show-stopping musical numbers to the heartfelt performances, the talented cast and crew brought this classic story to life, leaving a lasting impression and proving that high school theatre can be nothing short of extraordinary. The Story/MusicThe plot of 9 To 5 centers around three women in the 1970s who take matters into their own hands against their oppressive boss. Violet, a hardworking mother, Doralee, a confident and misunderstood coworker, and Judy, the newcomer, work at Consolidated under Mr. Hart, a "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" who constantly belittles his female employees. The story intensifies when Violet, Mr. Hart's unofficial assistant despite her outstanding performance, accidentally places rat poison in his coffee after a fantasy-filled conversation with Judy and Doralee. A series of chaotic events ensue as Roz, Mr. Hart’s devoted employee, overhears the trio’s panic and informs him. Although Mr. Hart avoids the poisoned coffee, he manipulates the situation to threaten the women’s jobs. However, the women quickly gain the upper hand, with Doralee subduing Mr. Hart and the trio holding him captive while enacting sweeping reforms within the office. When Mr. Tinsworthy, a Consolidated board member, arrives, he commends the women for their successful improvements and demotes Mr. Hart to the Bolivian operation. The women’s triumph marks a victory over workplace harassment and a celebration of their resilience. The music, a vibrant collection of solo and ensemble pieces, drives the narrative with remarkable quality. Iconic songs such as 9 To 5 and Cowgirl's Revenge stand out, with Doralee's actress, Emory Hines, delivering a powerful performance in a flawless southern accent. The PerformancesThe performances throughout the production displayed exceptional talent. Special recognition goes to Kaeleigh Bourgea (Violet), Emory Hines (Doralee), and Alexis Arruda (Judy) for their outstanding portrayals of the leading characters. Additionally, Julia Morgan (Roz) and Tyler Brackett (Mr. Hart) delivered memorable performances, blending strong vocals with compelling character work. Each principal actor showcased vocal strength, solo excellence, and harmonious ensemble work, displaying talent far beyond typical high school expectations. The pit band provided a stellar musical accompaniment, seamlessly enhancing each scene. Many of these musicians also performed at the MRHS Winter Concert, further demonstrating their musical versatility. The ShoutoutsSeveral individuals contributed notable efforts beyond the spotlight. Ben McGrath and Edrian Wright impressed by performing both onstage and in the pit band, alternating between character roles and musical duties. Chloe Eldredge brought humor to the stage as the office drunk, while Leyla Holmes added dimension as Mr. Hart's neglected wife, Missy. Wellington Holmes provided a strong performance as Joe, Violet’s love interest, and Chloe Thompson shone in multiple ensemble roles, particularly during Cowgirl’s Revenge. Backstage, the production relied on a talented technical team. Quill Adamsons, lead sound designer and board operator, ensured smooth audio production. Charlotte Mahoney operated the lighting board, and Kayandra Watson handled spotlight operations, providing essential support for the visual experience.
