Cross country at Monomoy is one of the sports at our school with the least recognition. Composed of twelve athletes this season, the team has created a close, positive environment for each other and hopes to gain more members in future years.
It is the first year that coach Phil Wright has had the role, previously coaching soccer. However, he is not new to the sport, taking part in it in high school and college. To him, the best part about cross country is how despite its difficulty, is how great it is to finish the race, because it is “hard but satisfying.” He hopes that in the upcoming seasons, there will be more recognition of the sport at MRHS and that more people will join the team, being willing to “try it out.”
The team also has two senior captains, Gareth Vos and Annalise Langelier.
Gareth Vos has been participating in cross country for five years. His favorite part of the team is “the camaraderie and how close the team is.” He believes that people should try the sport out and put in the effort it takes, “despite how tough it may be.”
Annalise Langelier has been on the team for two years. Her favorite part of the team is “the positive environment”. She thinks that it is the best sport and that people should “try it out as they will grow” to be better.
The opinion that people should just try out cross country is reiterated by a newcomer to the sport, junior Ryan Casey. His favorite part of cross country is “how welcoming all of the people are as well as how fun it is.”
Sophomores Chatham Gillis and Megan Gogol have been on the team for their whole high school careers. Both like how the sport “pushes them to be better.”
Overall, the team hopes to gain more members in future years and become even better, building up the encouraging and inviting environment that already exists on the team.
