On Tuesday, April 8, Monomoy's talented poets traveled to Bourne High School for an inspiring day of poetry, performance, and connection. Each year, BHS hosts a regional poetry event featuring two professional Boston-based poets who lead engaging writing workshops for students. The day also includes an open mic session and a thrilling poetry slam competition.
This year’s event brought together students from across the Cape, including Bourne, both Sturgis campuses, Wareham High School, and, of course, Monomoy. Special thanks go to our principal, Mrs. Police, for supporting our trip and bringing this opportunity to us, as well as poet and educator John Bonanni, who joined us for the day and even drove the van!
Several Monomoy students took part in the lunchtime open mic, sharing their original work with heart and courage. Shout-out to Jason Elhilow, Kyra Howard, Abbey Crownshaw, and Lily Williams for representing Monomoy with pride and passion.
An extra round of applause goes to our slam poets—Jason, Kyra, Abbey, Corinne Pina, and Davion Dawkins—who stepped up to compete in the poetry slam. Out of more than 20 competitors from five schools, the previously mentioned Howard and Crownshaw were selected as finalists for their powerful “poem for two voices,” earning one of only five prizes awarded.
As a club, Sandscript is proud of everything our poets accomplished and grateful for all we learned about writing, performance, and community. We look forward to returning to Bourne High next year!
