Our Mission
Innovative Green Nexus, Ignition & Thermal Energy (IGNITE) is a research platform encompassing combustion and fuel sciences, sustainable and waste-derived fuel blending, nanomaterial fuel additives, hydrogen and ammonia combustion, and fundamental flame and droplet combustion studies for internal combustion engines and gas-turbine-relevant combustors. The platform is multidisciplinary, bringing together postgraduate researchers, engineering and science backgrounds, and industry partners. It is part of the Mechanical Engineering Department, School of Engineering, Monash University Malaysia, and is led by Ir. Dr. Ooi Jong Boon (Jacob). IGNITE is affiliated with the Sustainable Energy Transition (SET) Research Hub's Energy-Efficient Mobility Systems theme and is based in the Sustainable Combustion Technologies Laboratory, which houses a diesel engine test bed for hydrogen- and biofuel-powered engine research. The team's work supports the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).
Current research directions:
Sequential fuel modification for CI engines - systematically evaluating how palm oil biodiesel (POB), waste plastic oil (WPO), and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) each affect droplet combustion, in-cylinder combustion, engine performance, and regulated emissions when incorporated stepwise into diesel, with GQDs concentration and engine operating conditions to be optimized via response surface methodology (RSM).
Nanomaterial and nano-additive enhanced fuels - carbon-based (graphite oxide, multiwalled carbon nanotubes, graphene quantum dots) and boron-based (ammonia borane) nanoparticles as fuel additives to improve heat transfer, atomisation, ignition, and combustion efficiency in diesel and biodiesel-diesel blends.
Hydrogen and ammonia combustion - experimental and computational studies of NH3/CH4 and NH3/biogas swirl-stabilised flames (flame structure, NO/N2O formation pathways), HHO-assisted hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel combustion, and computational studies of turbulent flames fuelled by gaseous hydrogen.
Waste-derived and circular-economy fuels - valorising waste streams (waste tyre oil, waste plastic oil) into ternary/quaternary diesel fuel blends, optimised for performance and emissions in light-duty diesel engines.
Fundamental flame and droplet combustion - co-flow and counterflow diffusion flame experiments and numerical modelling of soot and NOx formation in hydrocarbon flames; single-droplet micro-explosion, evaporation, and burning studies of biodiesel and nanoparticle-doped fuel droplets.
Hydrogen-powered energy systems - optimising hydrogen-fuelled genset performance integrated with a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser and electric turbo compounding, targeting net-zero power generation.
