Golf Guide: Tips to Improve Approach Shots

As most golfers are very well aware, golf consists of four categories: putting, approaches, driving, and short-game shots, which have a significant effect on the game score. And among all these, the approach shot typically can affect the game score the most. So, how is your approach shot, do you think you to improve it? Below are some important tips by experts, which can prove helpful in improving your approach shot.

UNDERSTAND THE CONDITIONS

Like with anything in life, preparation is key when it comes to achieving a perfect approach shot. You need to be aware of the hole and fully understand the condition of the atmosphere and how it’s going to affect your shot.

Wind- For any approach shot, it is important to take wind conditions into account. Evaluate how strong the wind is blowing and gain stability in your position before you make the swing.

Rain- Rain may not be much of the problem although it makes it hard to see properly. However, one thing you should be careful of is the wet grass, as it can make your ball slip further and potentially overpass the green.

THE RIGHT IRON, SWING, AND STRATEGY

The next part is to improve your swing, strategy, with the right iron. You can enhance this yourself in time, but as for start here is an approach you can start with.

Short Range (less than 120 yards) – Try to avoid bunkers, especially if you cannot play them well. At this range, go longer than you think so you can. It’s much better to make two long putts then try hacking your way out of those bunkers. For 85-120 yards, you can use partial swings or minimize the lofts on your irons.

Medium Range (120-200 yards) – Like all fairway shots, ensure to adjust all variables affecting the distance. Remember, you cannot achieve the best length at all times. At this range, you will want to club up and go for a smoother swing.

Long Range (200+ yards) – Don't panic and be realistic about your swing abilities. For a long approach, you will want to be more conservative and aim towards the safe part of the green.

Practice with the right clubs

Whether you want to improve approach shots, putting, or other game shots, practice is always important. On the course, you will get only a few chances to try your clubs and practice your swing, so it’s best that you practice well with the right clubs and master your swing and strategies beforehand.
