About me:
Mona Ghassemi joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Dallas in 2022 as an Associate Professor with Tenure and Chairholder of Texas Instruments Early Career Award for six years (2022-2028).
Prior to that, she was an Assistant Professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, USA (2017-2022), and has been named as both the Steven O. Lane Junior Faculty Fellow and College of Engineering (COE) Faculty Fellow since 2021.
In 2020, Mona made history as only the second member of the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to receive the NSF CAREER Award and the Department of Defense (DOD) Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Young Investigator Research Program Award in the same year. She is the fourth faculty member in the department to receive two of these early career awards during their career. [VTNews-NSF CAREER] [VTNews-AFOSR YIP].
In 2021, Mona made another record. She won the highly prestigious, highly competitive Department of Energy (DOE) Early Career Research Program Award ($750 K). This award made Mona the only faculty with 3 Career awards at Virginia Tech. She received her three awards from three different agencies: NSF, DOD, and DOE.
Mona is Vice-President (Technical) of the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS). She is also an At-Large Member of the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) for 2020–2023 and was re-elected for the second 3-year term running from 1st January 2023 to 31st December 2025, DEIS Representative in IEEE USA Public Policy Committee on Transportation and Aerospace Policy (CTAP) and in USA Technology Policy Council R&D Policy Committee, a Corresponding Member of the IEEE Conference Publication Committee (CPC) of the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES), an Active Member of several CIGRE working groups and the IEEE Task Forces, DEIS Technical Committee member on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation for Transportation Electrification, and a member of the Education Committee of the IEEE DEIS and PES. She was a member of the Nominations and Appointments Committee of IEEE DEIS.
She has been Senior Member of IEEE since 2016 and Professional Engineer since 2015.
Mona is Associate Editor of five journals: IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, IET High Voltage, International Journal of Electrical Engineering Education, and Power Electronic Devices and Components (Elsevier); and Guest Editor for Energies; and received the 2020 Contribution Award from High Voltage journal.
She has published over 150 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers and one book chapter and received 4 Best Paper Awards. Dr. Ghassemi has been listed among the World's Top 2% of Scientists in 2021 [Link] and 2022 [Link].
Her research interests include transportation electrification, clean energy, electrical insulation materials and systems, high voltage/field engineering and technology, power systems, and plasma science.
