A flexible musician actively broadens their musical expertise and cultural competence, embracing and adapting to diverse musical practices and contexts. They continuously seek to understand and appreciate the varied aesthetics and values of music from different cultures, beyond a single narrative or tradition.
Multi-Instrumentalism and Exploration: A Multifaceted Musical Journey
Playing multiple instruments and exploring various genres can really open up a world of creativity + understanding for students. It helps them become versatile musicians, appreciate different cultures, and find their own voice within a musical context. Between playing many different instruments and genres, students are able to engage in expanding their musical knowledge and skills in ways that reflect wider cultural awareness and competence. In my classroom, I want students to seek to understand the musical practices and aesthetics of others.
Participatory Culture and Vernacular Music: empowering students to be independent creators outside of the classroom
As a flexible musician, I will work to embrace a wide array of musical genres, styles, and artists in my curriculum. This is essential for nurturing students’ in their musical exploration and in helping them understand how music can be a tool for personal expression. As an educator, my role is to guide students rather than talk AT students, ensuring that each student's unique musical and personal tastes are prioritized. I'm committed to creating a curriculum that not only covers a diverse range of music but also encourages students to integrate music into their everyday lives, as a means of expression and connection outside our classroom. Students should learn to be producers of music, not just consumers.
Global Grooves: an educator's ethical use of multicultural music
As a flexible musician, I value picking multicultural music because it allows me to deepen my cultural awareness and competence. In order to have high cultural validity, I must choose music that has low bias. I must complete research to ensure the publisher / composer is reputable and educated on the music they are creating. Additionally, I must properly understand the historical context for the pieces I plan to learn with my students.
Swiss Army Knife: the Seven-Step framework to cultivating creativity in the classroom
As a flexible musician, the Seven-Step process encourages students and educators to explore different musical styles and genres, which helps you broaden your musical horizons. The Seven-Step process is like your musical Swiss Army knife– it's a guide that encourages you to explore new musical territories, collaborate with others, and reflect on your experiences. The CMS seven-step framework to creative music is different from regular lesson plans because it focuses specifically on fostering creativity and musical expression. It can be utilized for grades K-12 because it provides a flexible structure that can be adapted to different age groups and skill levels, allowing students to engage in creative musical experiences throughout their education.
Muted Mastery: Fostering Tone, Articulation, and Listening Through Adaptive Strategies
This lesson plan is reflective of my ability to scaffold instruction to fit a students's particular learning style. In this 60-minute lesson plan, which can serve as an example for all instrumental (private or group) lessons, introduced foundational concepts like air direction through student-centered warmups, and expanded into timbral exploration using physical trumpet mutes. Additionally, this lesson incorporated elements of music literacy and aural skills development through listening paired with a guided reflection. By mixing video demonstrations and tactile elements such as the coffee stirrer and trumpet mutes, I adapted my teaching strategies to support my student's learning style and provide multiple entry points for understanding.
Ultimately, this artifact showcases my ability to create a dynamic, standards-based lesson that meets students where they are while guiding them toward measurable growth as independent, strong musicians.
