Ali is a 27 year old male from Country X. Ali deemed Country X unsafe for him and his family due to the political crisis and poorly managed climate crisis that was occurring in his home country. He decided to migrate his entire family to Malaysia in hopes for a better life

Ali and his family moved to Malaysia in order to escape persecution. However, the Malaysian government does not officially recognise Ali and his family as refugees, viewing them as illegal immigrants. + family

In order to survive, Ali works laborious odd jobs like being a painter and construction worker. Working conditions are harsh but Ali works hard with his family in mind

Ali and his family live in a cramped one room apartment. His kids often get sick and money is barely enough to pay for rent and food.

The kids also do not have access to education

Ali frequently tries to go to register with UNHCR to have their asylum claims assessed by officers there to be issued a card of 'Persons of Concern'. This is in hopes that authorities won't disturb him and his family, will be able to afford hospital fees etc. However, long lines diminishes Ali's hopes, leaving him as an illegal immigrant who can be arrested, penalized and can be deported

Not only are there institutional challenges, but Malaysian society isn’t so forgiving. They can visibly observe people looking down on them Not only are they unable to fully trust anyone in fear of being reported or threatened, but they constantly see their friends being mistreated by business, the locals and authorities

Ali faces rampant racist and xenophobic comments everywhere, making him feel further unwelcomed

One day, his workplace was raided. Ali was stripped naked in Black Maria and an officer had beat him up so badly. This further traumatized Ali and his family.
