Dr. Mohammad Abbas Uddin (Shiyak) is a textile technologist, researcher, academic, project leader and international sustainability consultant with more than 24 years of experience spanning textile and garment manufacturing, applied research, environmental consultancy, circular economy, decarbonisation and policy development. 

He holds a PhD from the University of Manchester, UK, under the Commonwealth Scholarship, an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka, and a Master's degree from Curtin University of Technology, Australia, under the Australian Development Scholarship.

Professional Vision

Dr. Uddin's work is driven by a commitment to bridge research, industry and policy and translate technical knowledge into practical, scalable solutions for sustainable industrial transformation. His focus is on helping Bangladesh and other emerging textile-producing economies transition towards resource-efficient, circular, chemically responsible and low-carbon manufacturing.

Research, Innovation and Industrial Transformation

His research and innovation interests include sustainable textile wet processing, chemical management, water and resource efficiency, textile waste recycling, sustainable materials, wastewater treatment, circular economy and industrial decarbonisation. His work is strongly application-oriented, connecting scientific research with real industrial challenges and opportunities for technology adoption.

Academic and Institutional Leadership

At BUTEX, Dr. Uddin combines academic leadership with extensive industry and development-sector experience. He has previously served as Additional Director of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Assistant Director of the Executive Development Programme. He has also contributed to university strategic planning, skills development, quality assurance and industry–academia collaboration.

Capacity Development and Knowledge Transfer

Dr. Uddin has extensive experience in training, technical capacity development and knowledge transfer, having trained professionals from more than 100 textile factories, government officials, brands and industry service providers. His expertise includes chemical management, hazardous waste, sludge management, ETP operation, water efficiency, environmental assessment, circular economy and sustainable textile production.

International Consultancy and Project Leadership

He has led and managed 300+ resource-efficiency and sustainability assignments involving more than 200 factories, working with governments, international development organisations, brands, industry and academia. His international project experience includes engagements with GIZ, IFC–World Bank, UNIDO, Circle Economy, H&M Foundation, ECORYS, Arup, adelphi and other development partners.

Industry–Academia–Policy Interface

A defining strength of Dr. Uddin's work is his ability to operate across research, industry, government and policy. He has contributed to national chemical and environmental frameworks, including Chemical Management Rules, Hazardous Waste Management Rules, OCEMS-related work and national chemical management guidelines, while also serving on national technical committees and working groups.

International Engagement

Dr. Uddin contributes as a technical expert, project leader, keynote speaker, trainer and policy contributor in national and international forums. He welcomes collaboration with international research institutions, development partners, consulting firms, governments, industry and academic organisations on research, technical advisory, feasibility studies, policy development, project leadership and capacity-building initiatives.
