Before joining the Humanizing Online STEM Academy, I felt that I had a pretty good working knowledge of Canvas and best practices on teaching online classes because of the training and professional developments offered by Sierra College. However, there are still new ideas such as High/Low Cultural Context, Warm Demander and Wise Feedback as well as tools such as Flip, and Adobe Express, and Google sites. For me to try them for the past the 6-week I did not have a liquid syllabus, and a "bumper video" was also unknown to me before the Academy.
Within six weeks I have gained an insight as to how I could enhance my own connections to each student. I had been so caught up in making them relate to each other, I forgot that they should also relate to me. Not in a polished, edited, and captioned way. But in a way that was genuine and raw. I have built upon my video skills by bringing in different software and tools. I have also found fun ways to convert my Canvas discussions, which I felt were already impactful, into Flip that give voice to text - literally! With "Warm Demander" now being a part of my teaching philosophy, I know that I am capable of creating a relationship that allows students from all cultures to feel respected, valued, and capable of achievement.
This academy has empowered me with a sense of unapologetic authenticity and there is no going back. I intend on using these skills to always strive to turn all dependent learners into independent learners by the time they leave my course. I aim to use these skills for all my courses being taught this Fall. I also love how easy making the microlecture was so I hope to make one for each course outcome before the Fall semester begins.
A liquid syllabus is the first message that my students receive from me before the course begins with course information. My intent is for the students to finish reading it and feel engaged, excited, and in good hands.
The Screenshot shows my course card for my sandbox. The course is Human Anatomy, the card shows a thinking or wondering skeleton. I believe this cute image helps students get excited, wonder and thinking for what they will be learning in my course.
Before this academy, my Home Page was filled with a wall of text. Now, My homepage got an upgrade to include more images, warmer tones, and welcoming 2 minutes video.
I refined my student survey to have more specific questions about student 's preferred learning methods and communication methods for class feedback.
Some example questions:
How do you like to receive class feedback from me? Is written, video, and/or voice ok?
What do you know about how you learn? What works for you? What doesn't?
I have never used Flip before, and learned from this Academy, and I think it is a good tool for encouraging belonging and course community, especially early on in the semester. For this activity, I adapted the Self-Affirming Icebreaker template and created my own.
My 1:10 minute short and sweet Video and direct to the point, explaining the Serous Membrane structure and examples. It will fit with my lecture videos at the beginning of the module, and it clear a common confusion students have about it, which will improve the understanding and success.
During the last unit of Physiology Course, students will learn about a challenging concept of Counter Current Mechanism. I often see students struggle with this concept and wanted to make a video that focuses specifically on it.
After students finish watching the video will be able to:
Describe the main functions of the Kidneys.
Name the reasons for Kidneys produce to concentrated urine.
Know the three steps of producing concentrated urine.
Explain the Counter Current Mechanism.
Describe the role of ADH role in regulating the blood pressure.
