from 14 October to 15 October 2022

Fourth Annual Missouri Egyptological Symposium

at Washington University in St. Louis

Free and open to the public.

Our unofficial theme this year is "Egyptomania," that is our shared obsession with ancient Egypt throughout history, but we will have talks that highlight a broad range of topics. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Rita Lucarelli, will speak on Sun Ra, Afrofuturism and the reception of ancient Egypt. This two-day event is co-sponsored by the American Research Center in Egypt, Missouri Chapter, and the Departments of Classics and Art History and Archaeology at Washington University in St. Louis. The event is free and open to the public, but we do ask that you register in advance both for the Friday keynote and for the Saturday symposium by clicking the link above. Registration is not required, but in the chance that our room fills, priority will be given to pre-registered attendees.

Friday Afternoon Keynote

Dr. Rita Lucarelli of the University of California, Berkeley will give our keynote lecture on Friday afternoon on "Sun Ra, Afrofuturism, and the reception of ancient Egypt."

Saturday Symposium

Nearly a dozen papers will be presented in our all day symposium. Papers will be presented on a wide range of topics, and by a wide range of scholars--from university and museum professionals to community members with novel insights.

The Missouri Chapter of the American Research Center in Egypt aims to celebrate and share the culture and history of Egypt, from the ancient through Islamic periods with Missouri and its neighboring communities. Our focus is outreach and education, making Ancient Egypt more accessible. We educate through lectures, workshops, tours, and social events. Our events are led by top scholars and specialists in Egyptology, Coptic, and Islamic studies. We aim to find speakers and topics which are accessible, interesting, and fun for all audiences. We also strive to provide a community in which institutions, professionals in the field, and non-professionals of all ages can share their knowledge, interest, and love for Egypt.
