Maya is the manager and stylist of Modern Edge. She is 24 years old. She was born and raised in Idaho. Maya has always had a childhood dream of owning her own salon. She graduated high school in 2018 and started beauty school that September. After completing 1600 hours she finished school and shortly after became a licensed cosmetologist. She started her career at Supercuts in December 2019 and discovered a love for men's cuts. She was laid off in March of 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. She saw this as an opportunity to leave Supercuts and pursue her passion for Men's hair. In October of 2020, she became employed with SportClips which intensified her love for the hair industry and helped her strive to become more advanced in the craft. She takes every chance to showcase her hair art and talent and is excited to be branching out as an independent stylist.
Maya’s philosophy is that:
“To some people, hair is just hair. Yes, it grows back, luckily, since that is what keeps us in business but it is so much more to me. Yes, I am cutting a person's hair to make them feel more put together and happy, but I am also a part of people's lives in a very subtle way. I am a part of young men's graduations. I am a part of peoples' weddings, proms, and interviews for their dream jobs. It isn't just a career for me, it's an art, a passion, and my livelihood. It's everything that I enjoy rolled into one. Engaging with others, making friends, sharing my love for hair, and proving to people that I am here for each and every one of them every single time they sit in my chair. This is why I love what I do and I will continue to share my love with everyone.” ~Maya
Valora is the owner and business manager of Modern Edge. She is also Maya's mom. Valora has worked in public education since she was 20 years old. She has been a teacher's assistant, classroom math and Spanish teacher, education technology engineer, online curriculum coordinator, and principal, as well as other jobs in public education in Idaho. She had always dreamed of owning her own business but worried that it was risky when raising her family. She finally decided that opening a business that also helped her daughter build her career in cosmetology was a risk worth taking. Project management is her superpower and being a business owner is exactly the type of project she loves since it is challenging and extremely rewarding at the same time.
