The Automotive Upkeep Problem

Americans have their hands full.

Whether it's school, work, kids, travel, hobbies or some combination of those, nearly every aspect of life is easier said than done.  Everyone needs the peace of mind and reliability of their vehicle.  The automobile is a tool which allows its driver to operate at a normal level in this high-paced, technology-driven world.  Preventative maintenance is an important part of keeping a car running and in good condition, but these minor maintenance items are often overlooked or procrastinated leading to a shorter life of the vehicle.

DIY maintenance takes time and can make a mess.

Using the example from the story of our company, it's easier than you may think to accidentally drain something other than your oil pan, turning a cheap oil change into a lot more time and money than expected.

Additionally, without all the proper tools, it can be difficult to change a car's oil, even for a highly skilled mechanic.

Most mechanic shops come with an amount of uncertainty.

While a customer's car is in the shop, it is often literally behind closed doors.  The customer doesn't have a great idea of the quality of work and even if the work is being done.

Most mechanic shops do not make much money on smaller maintenance items, so there is incentive for them to upsell.  For example, a good buddy of ours worked as a mechanic at a nearby dealership until they told him to put leaves and dirt in the engine air filter, charging the customer to take them back out, without even replacing the filter.

As this infamous Kia owner found, it is possible to drive 78,000 miles without having an oil change, but the engine will eventually seize, stopping it from working at all.

The Classic Oil Change is one small task which is neglected, forgotten or at least procrastinated by many.  The resulting outcome can be many times more expensive than a an oil change at the manufacturer's recommended intervals.
