Different types of AR offer exciting mobile possibilities for elementary education. This means students can get away from their classrooms and out into environments where AR helps learning become more engaging, meaningful, and memorable.
Here are five types of augmented reality (Seel, 2020), many of which lend themselves to mobile education:
Location-based AR

provides information linked to current position using GPS data
beneficial for outdoor field trips and scavenger hunts
Recognition-based AR
Recognition-based AR
provides additional virtual information about a detected item
beneficial for museum visits and outdoor field trips
Projection-based AR
Projection-based AR
projects virtual content onto a real surface
beneficial for 3D modelling and visualization
Outlining AR
Outlining AR
merges body/body parts with virtual objects and projects both
beneficial for motor skill activities
Superimposition-based AR
Superimposition-based AR
adds additional virtual information to real objects
beneficial for museum visits and biology studies
