Live Sound Reinforcing Jazz Recitals at TUT Arts Festival in 2023
Tshwane University of Technology TUT Annual Arts Festival, Auditoriums [Jazz Recitals]
This was a throwback to an amazing day of Live Sound Engineering for jazz music at the TUT Arts Festival 2023. I was responsible for mixing a live jazz cover of Ngikunika Lonk'uThando by The Soil, performed by talented TUT Jazz students. This session was part of the critical preparation and technical rehearsals for the annual arts festival, ensuring everything was perfect before the main events
My Role & Responsibilities on this Project:
My key responsibilities for this project included:
Operating the Midas X32 Console: Managed all aspects of live sound reinforcement for the jazz ensemble, which included multiple vocalists and live musicians.
Sound Check and System Tuning: Trained by Sound Lecture to conduct detailed sound checks and tune the PA system to the acoustics of the Auditorium, ensuring optimal clarity and coverage for the vocal and instrumental arrangements.
Channel Strip Setup and EQ: Configured channel strips for each input, applying precise parametric EQ to shape the tone of vocals, grand piano, bass guitar, and brass instruments to sit perfectly in the mix.
Monitor Mixing: Created and managed separate monitor mixes for the performers on stage, ensuring they could hear themselves and each other clearly to deliver a cohesive performance.
System Preparation: This console was part of the initial setup for the recitals and festival preparations. My work involved ensuring the entire signal path was flawless before the system was later replaced with the larger Yamaha TL5 48-channel console for the main festival events.
