Justice is the building blocks to an effective society that serves everyone’s interests. Good and effective justice is not simply punishment for someone’s wrongs, nor it is an eye for an eye similar to the gjakmarrja or blood feuds, but is to right someone's wrongs, rehabilitate them into good members of society, and integrate them to the society they are in.
Labour believes that an adult court system would be too pressing for those who have unfortunately fallen into crime in their youth. Many have only fallen into crime due to peer pressure and poor family finances.
And Labour believes that it is no exception to those between 18-20 years old. They too are still in their youth and an adult court system would be pressing for them as many have never dealt with the law nor know much about it. Therefore Labour supports raising the Youth Court age up to 20.
Illicit drug usage is a health issue, not a criminal issue. We will take away any fines, charges or jail time away from anyone using currently illicit substances.
The prison system within Aotearoa is in a state in which prisoners are punished for their crimes, but left to go in a never-ending cycle that they cant escape from. Labour is committed to fixing the prison and justice system to ensure that rehabilitation is prioritised over punishment.
