Minnesota is home to more than 1700 vascular plant species, of which over 300 are listed as Endangered, Threatened or of Special Concern. For many of these rare plants, data on their distribution, population status, threats and potential management needs are incomplete. Current information is needed to inform the best methods for protecting and managing these unique species.
Rare plants are a strong indicator of overall ecological health. Habitats with a high diversity of native plants tend to support a greater abundance of birds, insects, and other wildlife species. A diverse ecological community is more resilient to threats such as climate change, invasive species, and disease. The presence, absence, or health of rare species populations (which often have specific habitat needs/sensitivities) can often serve as key indicators to the overall health of the native community. Therefore, understanding the current status of Minnesota’s rare plant populations will help us to prescribe and prioritize land management and conservation efforts to strengthen MN’s natural environments into the future.

Established in 2023, MN PlantWatch is a community science-driven initiative that supports and informs the conservation of Minnesota’s rare native plant species. MN PlantWatch volunteers search for and survey rare plants in their natural habitats in order to document their location and providing information about population health and habitat threats. Under the direction of staff, seed may also be collected from populations for genetic preservation in the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum's Rare Plant Seed Bank.
