I've been passionate about horses since I was five years old, and my journey in the equestrian world has been nothing short of fulfilling. Throughout my career, I've remained dedicated to helping others discover the joy of riding while continuously pushing myself to grow as a rider and trainer.
Early Success: My competitive career started at a young age with a World Championship and Reserve World Championship in dressage at the Morgan World Show, along with multiple national championships.
Competitive Excellence: I earned multiple top-10 finishes in the Working Hunter classes at the Morgan National & World Championship Show.
College Achievements: During my time in college, I was a proud member of both the IHSA and NCAA equestrian teams, further solidifying my commitment to the sport.
Professional Development: After college, I honed my skills through two working student positions, one of which was with a World Cup-qualifying jumping trainer, gaining invaluable hands-on experience.
Teaching & Training: At the age of 28, I transitioned into a professional role, offering lessons in both Western and English riding disciplines. Over the years, I've achieved local success with my students in all-around competition.
Diverse Skills: In addition to traditional riding disciplines, I have experience training mules and competing in Western Dressage with gaited horses.
Trail Riding Enthusiast: I also enjoy the peaceful escape of trail riding, experiencing the beauty of nature on horseback.
Recent Accomplishments:
*2020: CHA certified Western & English
*2021: I was honored to be named Reserve World Champion in Training Level Dressage, as well as in Musical Freestyle. I also placed in the Top 5 at First Level, showcasing my versatility and passion for continued growth in the sport.
*2022: Added Equine & Facility Management to my CHA certification
*2021-2025: As head trainer at Hearts & Horses, I over saw the design and implementation of individual training plans for 30+ horses and mules, keeping them sound both mentally and physically.
*2025: Competed at the 2025 National Western Stock Show on a mule with little show experience. She was wonderful.
"I had the pleasure of working with Melanie Newkirk and her horse, JR, and it was clear she was something special. As a student, she was attentive, driven, and eager to learn—but it’s her natural talent and intuition around horses that truly set her apart. Melanie is an outstanding horsewoman in every sense of the word. Her deep understanding of equine behavior, paired with her innate showmanship and genuine love for the sport, make her a standout in and out of the ring. True professionals are always looking to further hone their skill set, and Melanie exemplifies that mindset. She never stops learning, growing, and striving to be better—for herself and for the horses in her care. Any horse—and any rider—would be lucky to work with her"
