Binary network marketing (also known as a binary compensation plan) is a type of multilevel marketing (MLM) structure in which participants are organized in a binary tree-like hierarchy. In this model, each member or distributor is required to recruit two others, creating two legs: a left leg and a right leg. This system allows the organization to grow exponentially as each new recruit brings in two more recruits.
Key Features of Binary Network Marketing:
1. Binary Structure:
- Distributors have two "legs" (downlines).
- Each new recruit is placed in one of the two legs, either directly by the distributor or through spillover from the upline.
2. Balanced Growth:
- Commissions are often tied to how balanced the two legs are. Earnings are typically calculated based on the performance of the weaker leg.
- Distributors are incentivized to build both legs equally to maximize potential earnings.
3. Spillover:
- In some binary MLM plans, distributors may receive recruits from their upline when those upline members' two legs are full. This is called spillover and helps build one of the distributor's legs automatically.
4. Commission Structure:
- Commissions are generally earned based on sales volume or recruits in both legs, particularly from the weaker leg.
- There may also be bonuses for achieving certain levels or for balancing both legs.
5. Capping of Income:
- Many binary MLM plans have a limit on the amount of commission that can be earned per period (daily, weekly, monthly).
- Any volume exceeding the cap may be forfeited or carried over depending on the company.
Advantages:
- Teamwork: Encourages teamwork as growth on both legs is needed for success.
- Spillover: New recruits can benefit from spillover from their upline.
Disadvantages:
- Balance Requirement: If one leg outgrows the other, income can be limited.
- Recruitment Pressure: Like most MLM models, there can be significant pressure to continuously recruit new members.
Criticisms:
Binary network marketing, like other MLM models, has faced criticism for sometimes resembling a pyramid scheme, where the primary focus is on recruiting rather than selling actual products or services.
