Claude Gibney Davies was born in 1875 in Delhi, British India. He changed his surname to Finch-Davies following his marriage in 1916, and his later works do reflect this as he had signed those works later in life. He died in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1920.
I had previously quoted him on the page of plates by J. G. Keulemans for The Ibis, 1875 (link). Specifically I allude to the caption to Plate VI for that publication (Accipiter ovampensis). Also see an example of his painting of the Crowned Eagle in The Unknown Andean Condor (UAC6).
Finch-Davies published a scientific name, Tinnunculus rupicolus rhodesi. Appearing in 1920 in The Ibis (p. 620), it is a synonym of Falco [tinnunculus] rupicolus, the Rock Kestrel. The specimens upon which his name is based were collected in the Matopo Hills and Bulawayo, South Africa. It was described as the "Matopo Kestrel."
