Science & Community
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality,
tied in a single garment of destiny.
Whatever affects one directly,
affects all indirectly.”
— Martin Luther King Jr.
I believe that a feeling of belonging is essential to pursuing a successful career in science, and to scientific progress more broadly. Science thrives when people with different experiences, perspectives, and ways of thinking feel welcome and able to contribute. Creating spaces within academia where researchers and students can share their experiences, including the challenges of being a minority or following a non-traditional path, is therefore an important part of building a stronger scientific community. I have shared my own experience of finding a place in academia through public talks, and through the articles below.
