This project was created from a game jam themed around the "Zero's Journey", a chance to experiment with the hero's journey in a non-serious way.
Each group was tasked with creating their own character and level to represent their chosen stage in the hero's journey. My group chose to go with the idea of using shapes as our characters to simplify the development of our chosen character. I was responsible for programming my player character and level as well as programming the doors, buttons, and the mechanic to allow the player to switch between shapes.
The sphere is focused around going fast at the cost of its jump height. While it's the fastest among all 4 of the shapes, it can't do everything on its own. The default player mesh was removed and replaced with a sphere. It also rotates when moving!
Programmed the doors, platforms, and buttons the player will need to find to progress through the game.Â
The first level showcases the theme of our game, starting the player off as a sphere beginning its escape from sector 2D of some unknown lab. Blaring alarm lights and the door at the end of the level guide the player to the end while teaching them the mechanics of the game and the sphere.
As the finale of our prototype, the player needs to use the speed of the circle, shape shifting of the square, charge jump of the cone, and wall climbing of the dodecahedron to get past this test of mastery. Players will need to go out of their way to find every button needed to complete the game.
