The moment you set a flame to your wick, your candle is alive.
It takes on a whole new life of its own and a life with you!
Calculating burn time involves many factors. Quality ingredients: Type of oils, type of wick, type of wax, air movement, air quality, & your wick trimming schedule and adherence all play huge roles in the amount of time your candle will burn and defuse aroma in the space it captivates.
If you are a candle handler and you manage and use candles regularly, you'll find a difference in every type of candle you use. Tea Lights aren't the same as regular container candles and regular container candles aren't the same as pillar candles. Every candle type, every candle style and candle maker, matters.
Let's get into it!
The first time you light a flame to your wick (brand new candle, never been burned), is when you should let it burn the longest. The first time you burn a candle, excluding pillar candles, you should let the wax melt all the way to the rim of the container. Depending on the candle style, burn time may vary but we recommend at least 2 hours, max 4 hours for your initial burn.
Trimming your wick is your candle's love language! Period.
The shorter you trim your wick, the longer you can typically burn the candle depending on the wax and oils used. Regular scissors work fine but there are wick trimmers. Be sure to read the warning sticker or candle handling directions when you're using store-bought candles or handcrafted candles, each may require different attention. Be sure to not trim your wick too short, your candle may not burn properly.
The recommended wick size for MayLee's aromatherapy candles is 1/6 inch for soy-based wax blends and 1/4 for beeswax-based blends.

A candle's base is the blend of the wick, waxes and oils. It is the key component in determining a candles burn time!
For example, if you are burning a container candle whatever the wax blend and your wick is too long, its more likely that your oils will burn and evaporate quicker (lessen burn time), your wax could possibly catch flame (depending on oil types), or your container could overheat and crack or burn the surface of whatever your container candle is resting on.
Either the window is cracked or a fan is on near your candle, be mindful of your flame motion and soot release.
For example, if your candle is under a fan and the fan is over exposing your flame to air, your wax and oils can overheat and not burn properly, giving you a quicker burn time. Oils and Waxes will evaporate quickly.
If you prefer circulating air, avoid the high speed for the best aromatherapy results.
Also, the quality of air does impact your aromatherapy experience greatly.
Our burn time predictions are based upon our candle handling suggestions. Trimming your wick, minding the candle maker and following the candle handling suggestions is very important when trying to get the best aromatherapy results from any candle!
