DESCRIPTION: Meet a certified tour guide and explore one of the oldest living cities in the Western Hemisphere. Walkthrough UNESCO heritage sites and other unique Old San Juan landmarks. Meet & connect with local piragueros along the way, live!

PURPOSE: Develop an understanding of how old cities were built inside city walls. Increase your cultural awareness, gain tools to broaden your perspective in history, geography, and language. Use your Spanish skills to interview and ask your guide (and locals along the way) city life-related questions.

PRESENTERS: Your Vamonos host with our local Martiniquais M/C

DESCRIPTION: Meet Vamonos’ most electric speaker, presenter, M/C, musician, and artist. Learn fun dances and games, along with some live percussion, as you find out how music and mother earth played a key role in offering slaves a respite from slavery.

PURPOSE: Learn the importance of music and rhythm in creole cultures. Discover how slaves fused creole dances, games, and music into agricultural tasks. Practice your French with a local speaker as you learn some creole as well. Learn simple and fun creole games and dances. Discover how percussion played a central role in creole culture overall. Explore why it’s so important for our speaker to spread old creole culture, music, and traditions to the younger generation.

OVERVIEW 5 Min: Introduction to Martinique and to our presenter by our host. 25-30 Min: Interactive live games, music, and dance >5-10 mins: Q & A session

  • PSMLA’s 2021 Fall Virtual Conference will take place from Wednesday, October 13 through Saturday, October 16.

The virtual conference will begin on Wednesday, October 13 with an opening keynote address by ACTFL’s 2020 Teacher of the Year, Rebecca Blouwolff, and end with a closing address by the Second Lady of Pennsylvania, Gisele Barreto Fetterman, on Saturday, October 16.

Over 30 live interactive sessions will be presented after the typical school day from Thursday, October 14 through Saturday, October 16. Additionally, pre-recorded sessions will be available on-demand on Thursday, October 14 through February 28, 2022. Live and on-demand presentations will address topics about communicative pedagogy, technology integration, diversity/equity/inclusion/social justice, and more.
