Introduction 

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the healthcare landscape. From the development of new drugs and treatments to the delivery of care, AI has the potential to improve the lives of patients and providers alike. However, with this transformation comes a new set of ethical challenges. The Healthcare Engineering Lab is an informal gathering of like-minded faculty and students. Our areas of interest include:

• Machine Learning and AI applied to the analysis of health insurance data, 

• Medical image processing using DeepLearning/AI, 

• The ethics of Artificial Intelligence (in general and in relation to medical data and devices), and

• Generative AI and Agentic AI

We believe that our R&D work will help to ensure that AI is used to improve the lives of patients and providers, while also protecting the rights and interests of individuals. We invite you to join us in this important work. 

MS in Applied Data Science 

Currently, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County's Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering offers a PBS (Certificate) and an MS (Master of Science) in Applied Data Science. The admissions requirements can be found on the Registrar's website. 

PBC students need 4 courses whereas MS students need 10 courses in total. After finishing the first 6 required courses and one semi-elective, MS students can choose various pathways in their MS program to take 3 more courses from the same pathway.

MPS in Applied Artificial Intelligence (to be launched in Spring 2027) 

The upcoming  MPS AAI program is designed to prepare professionals to navigate and lead in this dynamic field. The program aims to develop the next generation of AI leaders who can drive technological advancement and address complex challenges across diverse sectors by equipping students with cutting-edge skills in machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, robotics, and AI ethics. The MPS in AI will offer a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring graduates will be well-prepared to implement AI solutions in real-world scenarios.
