It started long time ago when my aikido trainer who also worked as administrator of slot machine hall asked me to make a tool to reprogram memory of slot machine during emergency power off. He dropped the drawings from internet on my desk and said that I looked smart enough to work it out :)
First I tried laser printer/iron technology and obviously failed. There was Z80 on the board and many small routes which were easily damaged during etching. The PCB was designed in Corel Draw, I didn't know about any special tools for it that time.
Shortly afterwards I discovered PCAD which made PCB design more elegant. In 2005 first spray photoresists appeared on the market for common people, next film photoresists. Using photoresists made possible to produce routes thinner than 20 mil.
