Technical Education plays a vital role in human resource development of the country by creating skilled manpower, enhancing industrial productivity and improving the quality of life of its people. Technical Education covers programmes in engineering, technology, management, architecture, town planning, pharmacy, applied arts & crafts, hotel management and catering technology.
Engineering education is the activity of teaching knowledge and principles to the professional practice of engineering. It includes an initial education (bachelor's and/or master's degree), and any advanced education and specializations that follow. Engineering education is typically accompanied by additional postgraduate examinations and supervised training as the requirements for a professional engineering license. The length of education, and training to qualify as a basic professional engineer, is typically 8–12 years, with 15–20 years for an engineer who takes responsibility for major projects.
The technical education scenario in Kerala has undergone phenomenal changes in recent years due to the sanctioning of self-financing colleges in the private sector since 2000. When eighth five year plan ended in 1997, Kerala had only 15 engineering colleges with an annual intake of 4844 students but at present there are altogether 169 engineering colleges with a approved annual intake of 55665, which means that annual intake of students in UG engineering colleges in Kerala constitutes 3.78 percent of all India UG students intake. The growth of various engineering disciplines during these years has mainly occurred in the private sector.
Directorate of Technical Education, Kerala is dealing with all the technical education activities in the state. Currently there are 12 Engineering Colleges (9 Govt. Colleges and 3 Govt. aided Colleges), 51 Polytechnic Colleges (45 Govt. Polytechnics and 6 Govt. aided Polytechnics), 3 Fine Arts Colleges, 39 Technical High Schools, 17 Commercial Institutes and 42 Tailoring and Garment Making Centres functioning all over the state, under the control of the Directorate. In addition to this there are around 150 self financing Engineering Colleges both in the Govt. and private sector functioning in the state. The department of Technical Education was established in the year 1957, even though the first Engineering College in the State started functioning in the year 1939. From one institution in the year 1939, the number has grown to 156 when it reached 2013 and the seats from 21 to 52,000 respectively.
Engineering education
Before 2015, engineering colleges in Kerala used to be under various universities like Mahatma Gandhi University, Cochin University, Calicut University, Kerala University, Kannur University with the exception of NIT-Calicut. But as of today, all engineering colleges other than the University campus themselves come under a single roof named Kerala Technological University, which was later renamed to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. Before KTU, we used to have different timings, different syllabus, different exams, etc. Now with KTU, we have a uniform syllabus, uniform exam pattern and uniform academic calendar all throughout Kerala.
APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (initially Kerala Technological University), a State Government University has come into existence on May 21, 2014 with an aim to give leadership to the technology related policy formulation and engineering planning for the State. It also emphasizes to improve the academic standards of the graduate, post graduate and research programmes in engineering science, technology and management and regulate the academic standards of all colleges affiliated to the university. The main thrust areas of the university are research, development and innovation.
