I Teach... What is Your Super Power?
I Teach... What is Your Super Power?
"A Teacher takes a hand, opens a mind, and touches a heart." ~Anonymous
My name is Mary Ketsith, and I am from Ypsilanti, Michigan. I am currently in the teaching profession, learning how to be a classroom and online teacher. I am looking to further my career in the Orange County School District. I have worked in a classroom with 4—and 5-year-old children.
Education refers to acquiring knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes through various forms of learning. My philosophy of education is that all children are special in their way. By stimulating the educational environment, children can grow socially, mentally, and emotionally. I want them to reach their highest potential and learn something new every day.
I believe that children are the future. Children who are educated in a developmentally appropriate environment will have a long, positive future. We as teachers, mentors, and parents are a big key factor in contributing to their needs and goals. If we understand the biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional aspects of children through play, then we can better teach them. Having positive mentors, co-teachers, and professors to help guide us with their knowledge, we as teachers will go in the right direction and pour positivity into our classrooms as well as others around us.
I admire John Dewey's philosophy. He said," Students learn best through active participation in relevant, experiential learning."

Strong understanding of how a child develops in learning, skill in creating and engaging in developmentally appropriate activities, effective communication with both children and parents, respectful, active listening, patience, and understanding that each child is unique. To be a "good/likable" teacher, you must produce excellent communication skills and have effective communication with both children and parents.
The qualities of a good teacher are flexibility, adaptability, patience, and creativity.
Teaching in Diverse & Contemporary Classrooms
Reflective practice means teachers think about their teaching and how they interact with students, and helps to:
Understand Students: By considering students' experiences, teachers learn more about what students need and where they come from.
Be More Aware: Teachers notice how culture affects students' behavior and learning, so they can teach better.
Get Better: Reflecting helps teachers improve their methods and make learning more fun and effective.
Play is important for kids because it:
Helps Them Express Themselves: Kids try out different roles and scenarios, which helps them understand who they are.
Builds Social Skills: Playing with others teaches kids how to talk, work together, and solve problems.
Encourages Creativity: Imaginative play lets kids explore different parts of their identity safely.
Culture shapes kids' identities by:
Giving Them a Framework: Cultural norms and traditions help kids understand their place in the world.
Influencing Beliefs and Behaviors: Culture affects how kids see themselves and others, shaping their beliefs and actions.
Creating Belonging: Being part of a cultural group gives kids a sense of belonging, which is important for their emotional and social growth.
Being responsive to the culture of children and their families is important because it:
Promotes Inclusivity: Culturally responsive teaching makes all students feel valued and included, which helps them learn better.
Builds Trust: Understanding cultural differences helps build trust between teachers, students, and families.
Improves Communication: Knowing cultural nuances helps avoid misunderstandings.
Supports Development: Recognizing cultural backgrounds helps support children's overall growth by respecting their identities.
I have had the opportunity to be a Lead teacher at the Lab School at Orange Coast College. Being part of a teaching team inspired me the most. I've always had a passion for working with young children and seeing things through their eyes.
