Frank Gehry est né le 28 février 1929, à Toronto, sous le nom de Frank Owen Goldberg. Créatif et bricoleur pendant son enfance, il décide d'étudier l'architecture en allant à l'université de Californie du Sud, de 1949 à 1954. En 1956, il poursuit ses études d'urbanisme, à la Graduate School of Design de l'Université d'Harvard. Il abandonnera celles-ci au bout d'une année et débuta sa carrière en travaillant pour plusieurs cabinets d'architectes à Paris. En 1962 Frank Gehry s'envole vers Los Angeles pour créer sa firme d'architecture. A l'aide d'une équipe d'architectes d'expérience qui le conseillent et travaillent avec lui il produira certains des immeubles les plus fascinants de notre époque.
Tout au long de sa carrière, Frank Gehry réalisera des bâtiments à travers le monde : en Asie, en Europe et en Amérique. Ils se démarquent par leur forme et leurs matériaux, des immeubles enrobés de Titanium aux formes fragmentées, curvilignes et ondulées comme le musée Guggenheim (Bilbao), ou bien le Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles). Deux des ses productions mondialement reconnues pour leur aspect déconstructiviste de l'architecture contemporaine sont le 8 Spruce Street (Manhattan) et la Maison Dansante (Prague). En 2001 Frank Gehry rencontre le directeur général de LVMH, pour produire en 2014 la Fondation Louis Vuitton à Paris, une architecture organique respectant l'environnement, les formes ondulantes produisant des jeux de matières et de lumières.
Pour récompenser ses nombreuses productions, Frank Gehry a reçu plusieurs prix comme le prix Pritzker en 1989, la Médaille d'Or d'AIA en 1999, la Médaille d'Or Royale pour l'Architecture, en 2000, ou bien le Clio Award, en 2018, un prix d'honneur.
Frank Gehry was born on February 28, 1929, in Toronto, with the name Frank Owen Goldberg. Creative and handy during his childhood, he decided to study architecture by going to the University of South California, from 1949 to 1954. In 1956, he continued his urbanism studies at the Graduate School of Design of Harvard University. He left these after one year and he started his career by working with many architect's offices in Paris. In 1962, Frank Gehry flew to Los Angeles to create his own architecture firm. With the help of experienced architects, who advised and worked with him, he produced most of the most fascinating buildings in our area.
During his career, Frank Gehry did constructions all around the world: in Asia, Europe and America. They stand out by their forms and their materials, buildings with fragmented, curvilinear and wavy Titanium forms such as the Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao), or the Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles). Two of his productions known all around the world for their aspects of contemporary architecture are the 8 Spruce Street (Manhattan) and the Dancing House (Prague). In 2001, Frank Gehry met the general director of LVMH, to produce in 2014 the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, an organic architecture respecting the environment, with rippling forms playing with lights and materials.
To reward his several productions, Frank Gehry received many prizes such as the Pritzker Prize in 1989, the Gold Medal of the AIA in 1999, the Royal Gold Medal for the Architecture in 2000 or the Clio Award, in 2018, a prize of honour.
