Although commercial value seems to constantly pop up in my work as well as popular culture, kitsch imagery and colour palette it is just what I am drawn to and not exactly what I want to present . I want to make work that engages people as opposed to selling. However I find the best possible way to engage someone is through advertising as it grabs you out of your seat and demands your attention through intelligent slogans, bright colours and the idea of a product. Hence my want to advertise my work.
This want presents my work in a professional manner as the processes, time and research are that of a professional standard. Everything is highly thought about and calculated as I have a set idea in mind and I stick to it. I think my work stems from personal viewpoint I am more likely to be interested in something if it’s is marketed to me as a product as opposed to art. I find I am more drawn to heavy hitting artists such as Mark Ryden and Hieronymus Bosch, as they focus on only colour palette and their imagery tends to stem from sexualisation and the sense of broken innocence.
I like work that will grab someone’s attention not for sole purpose of it being lewd but for the hidden depths and research behind it and what the artist wants to convey through the work. I don't make work solely for mixed view points as I don't command reaction from my work in a similar way as Jeff Coones, as I am simply presenting something as it is. it is genitalia, but it also stems from the idea of humour in art and the simply idea of ‘it is what it is’, as I have found through many learning experiences that art does not have to be serious but in the same light it does not always have to be silly.
It’s the idea of satire that I am drawn to, yes they are penises and yes they have been made into plant pots but you also have to remember that they are what they are. They are just penis plant pots. And why did I make them? Because I wanted to combine two of my favourite things - the erotic and current life.
The problem with this is that I am constantly being asked what I want to do with it and where I want to go and I can’t simply just say I did this because I wanted to do it because I have to say I seem to have to have a deep-seated meaning for my work. However it boils down to the fact I do what I do because I enjoy it and I love to make, I love to make people laugh, I love to make people step back and think. I love to make people see the relationship between cock and cactus although I don’t demand reaction I do enjoy seeing them.
