Engineering solutions that support communities and create lasting change.
Our chapter is partnering with the rural community of Jayuma, Bolivia, to improve access to safe and reliable sanitation. The community faces challenges accessing adequate restroom facilities and handwashing stations. Through collaboration with community members and our local partner, Engineers in Action Bolivia, we are working toward sustainable sanitation solutions that support the health and well-being of the community.
Our project is currently in the assessment stage. Our next step is to visit Jayuma to learn more about the community’s needs, understand its priorities, and work together to determine the best path forward.
Access to safe sanitation remains a challenge for families and students in Jayuma. Many households lack adequate sanitation facilities, while the school’s existing restrooms are deteriorating and lack sufficient handwashing facilities. The school also faces challenges with its water supply, which depends on deliveries from the municipality.
These conditions raise concerns about hygiene and community health. Our project aims to address these challenges by working with Jayuma’s residents to identify practical, sustainable solutions that reflect their needs and priorities.
Working alongside the Jayuma community, our chapter aims to improve access to safe sanitation through the following initiatives:
EWB projects involve ongoing collaboration with community members to understand local needs, develop appropriate solutions, and support long-term success. Our work in Jayuma will progress through three main stages.
Our first trip will focus on meeting with community members, learning more about their sanitation needs, and understanding their goals and priorities. We will gather information about existing conditions to help evaluate potential solutions and guide the next steps in the project.
Following assessment and planning, our team will work with professional engineering advisors, community members, and local partners to evaluate potential solutions, develop an appropriate engineering design, and implement the selected solution based on the assessment findings and community priorities.
After construction is completed, our team will return to evaluate how well the project is functioning and how effectively the community is maintaining the new sanitation facilities. We will assess the project’s long-term sustainability, identify any needed improvements, and use what we learned to guide future project decisions.
