by Mitra Jouhari
My name is Mitra Jouhari, and I was born on January 18, 1993, in West Chester, Ohio. As an Iranian-American comedian, actress, and writer, my path from a suburban Ohio kid to writing for some of television's most beloved shows has been anything but conventional.
I was raised in West Chester, Ohio, navigating the unique experience of being Iranian-American in the Midwest. My cultural background has always informed my comedy, giving me a perspective that blends the earnestness of American suburbia with the complexity of my Iranian heritage.
From childhood, I was a fan of comedy. I consider the television shows The Daily Show and MAS*H pivotal to developing my interest in comedy. These shows taught me that humor could be both entertaining and meaningful, a lesson that would shape my entire career approach.
My journey into professional comedy began with performance and writing. I'm an LA-based comedian, writer, and performer, though I've also spent significant time in Brooklyn. The transition from Ohio to the coasts was both exciting and daunting, but I knew I needed to be where the comedy was happening.
I feel most comfortable when I'm being "disgusting, but also honest" – a philosophy that has guided my comedy throughout my career. This approach has allowed me to tackle difficult topics while maintaining the authenticity that audiences connect with.
One of my most significant creative endeavors has been Three Busy Debras, the sketch comedy group I co-founded. What started as live performances eventually became something much bigger. In 2020, Adult Swim transformed Three Busy Debras into a television series of the same name.
I'm best known for starring in the television series Three Busy Debras, based on the sketch comedy group we created. The show represents everything I love about comedy – it's weird, honest, and unafraid to go to uncomfortable places. Working with my comedy partners has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
My television writing portfolio has grown significantly over the years. I've written for the television series Big Mouth, High Maintenance, and Miracle Workers. Each show has presented unique challenges and opportunities to explore different aspects of comedy writing.
I also worked on The President Show on Comedy Central, for which I was nominated for a WGA Award. The Writers Guild of America Award nomination was a significant milestone in my career, validating the work I was doing in political comedy during a particularly intense time in American politics.
My work extends beyond traditional television. I've written for Pod Save America on HBO and worked on the inaugural season of several groundbreaking shows. Each project has taught me something new about storytelling and comedy.
As an actress, I've appeared in several notable projects. I had a role in Judd Apatow and Kumail Nanjiani's feature THE BIG SICK, which was both a critical and commercial success. The film dealt with themes of cultural identity and family relationships – topics that resonate deeply with my own experience as an Iranian-American.
I've also appeared on Comedy Central's BROAD CITY and on HBO Max's SEARCH PARTY. Each of these appearances allowed me to work with incredible creative teams and expand my range as a performer.
More recent projects include work on Clone High, Digman!, The Bear, and Urkel Saves Santa: The Movie! – showing the range of projects I'm drawn to, from animation to prestige television.
Beyond writing for established shows, I've also focused on creating original content. I created and starred in the scripted podcast F*CK HUT MUSI..., which allowed me to explore long-form storytelling in an audio format.
Podcasting has become an increasingly important medium for comedy, and I'm excited to be part of that evolution. The intimacy of the format allows for a different kind of comedy than television or live performance.
I'm represented by United Talent Agency, which has helped me navigate the complex world of entertainment industry opportunities. Having strong representation has been crucial in developing my career across multiple mediums.
The recognition from the Writers Guild of America for my work on The President Show was particularly meaningful. It's one thing to make people laugh; it's another to have your peers in the industry recognize the craft and skill involved in comedy writing.
As I continue to develop as a writer, actress, and producer, I'm always looking for projects that challenge me creatively. Whether I'm working on television series, films, or original content, my goal remains the same: to create comedy that is both entertaining and meaningful.
My Iranian-American identity continues to inform my work, and I'm committed to bringing diverse perspectives to mainstream comedy. There's still so much room for growth in how we tell stories and whose voices get heard.
From my early days in West Chester, Ohio, watching The Daily Show and MAS*H, to writing for some of television's most innovative shows, it's been an incredible journey. And I'm just getting started.
