I am a sociologist who studies gender, work, family, education, inequality, and social policy using quantitative methods with a focus on cross-national comparisons and social demography. Currently, I am a Visiting Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), as well as a Visiting Researcher at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center and Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

My research has focused on three issues: (1) the effect of marriage on wages across cohorts in the United States (Journal of Marriage and Family), (2) race and gender differences in returns to education (Social Science Research),  and (3) race and cohort differences in family formation trends across generations in the United States (Socius: Sociological Research for a Dynamic World). 

My recent work also examines (1) the gendered impact of parenthood on job-related training participation (European Sociological Review), (2) parents' work–family conflict and children's emotional well-being (Journal of Family Issues), and (3) the relationship between motherhood and self-employment participation (Research Handbook on Self-Employment and Public Policy).

Before joining UC3M, I was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center and the University of Siegen, and a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. I received a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I hold an M.A. in Sociology from Columbia University and a B.A. in Urban Sociology from the University of Seoul.
