Before Reading:
A memoir is a type of book or writing where someone shares their personal experiences, memories, and reflections from their own life. It's like taking a journey through the author's past, exploring significant events, emotions, and lessons learned along the way. Memoirs offer readers a glimpse into someone else's life story, often filled with honesty, insight, and personal growth. Prior to reading "A First Time For Everything," students should (in small groups) should discuss the following questions to build schema:
Use the title, the cover of your novel, and the picture on the back to predict what it will be about.
Do you think this will be fiction or nonfiction?
What is your prior knowledge on studying abroad?
Have you ever had a sick family member? How did that effect you?
During Reading:
X Marks the Spot is a reading strategy that gets students engaged with their reading. On the board, the teacher should provide a key to what their students are to look; along with Post-It notes so students do not write inside books! An example key could go as follows:
X = key point
! = I get it! I can explain that!
? = I am confused on this.
Teachers, be sure to model how students should be actively engaging in their reading, asking questions and making connections.
After Reading:
The purpose of a one pager is giving students the opportunity to show their comprehension of the novel as well as giving them the opportunity to show off their creative side.
It is time to embark on an exciting journey into the world of studying abroad. Have you ever dreamed of traveling to far-off lands, immersing yourself in new cultures, and expanding your horizons through education? Well, get ready to turn those dreams into reality as we dive into the art of creating travel brochures for students who are eager to explore the world while pursuing their studies.
