Mission 4.7 believes in Transformative Education
Transformative Education is an umbrella term that encompasses the common objectives and methodologies of the types of education outlined in SDG Target 4.7 including education for sustainable development, global citizenship education, environmental education, climate education, peace and human rights education, and others. Transformative Education delivers not only the knowledge, but also the competencies, values and skills necessary for current and future generations to achieve the goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Climate Agreement. Transformative Education applies to learners of all ages and levels.
Implementing action-oriented transformative learning requires more than integration of SDG 4.7 contents into curriculum. It requires shifts in education systems, schools, and classroom cultures to be more in-tune and responsive to community histories, cultures, and needs, and to facilitate learning opportunities that build learner agency and help connect and address local and global challenges.
It involves the efforts of educators, education leaders and decision-makers at sub-national, district, school, and classroom levels. It requires curriculum reform efforts, curriculum audits and analyses identifying gaps in existing curricula where further integration of transformative learning is needed and identifying opportunities within existing curricula where transformative learning can be woven in. It requires school- and classroom-based curriculum delivery strategies and examples of contextual adaptation for specific community and school scenarios.
Mission 4.7's framework adopts UNESCO's Learning Objectives to Achieve the SDGs to define the scope of learning expectations. While recognizing the country- and state-specific curriculum standards, it promotes value in organizing learning expectations into three categories - cognitive, social-emotional, and behavioral. Additional contributing frameworks include 21st century skills, social emotional learning, and climate justice.
