Lesson Overview
In this lesson, you will explore Gustav Holst's musical suite The Planets. Gustav Holst, an English composer, was interested in the planets in our solar system. Holst wanted to create a movement, or a song, for each of the planets. He thought about the unique characteristics of each planet and how he could use musical elements (tempo, dynamics, mood, style, instruments) to show how each planet had a different personality.
You will explore each of the movements. As you listen, try to determine the musical characteristics that make each planet unique. You will then demonstrate your knowledge by choosing one of the following assignments:
Create a composition for Earth (or for an imaginary planet)
Create a video discussing your favorite movement
Create choreography for one of the movements
But first, let's check your knowledge! Please click the link below to complete a pre-test on the planets in our solar system.
