Mrs. Denton

University Preparation Charter School

Teacher 411:  My name is Mrs. Denton (formerly Miss Colon); this is my tenth year as the 8th grade language arts and history teacher at UPCS; it has been a joy to be an educator at our school since 2010. I have had the privilege of being developed as an educator, stretched, and shaped into being the teacher that I am today at UPCS over the last thirteen years.

Please know that our partnership is very important to me. My priority is your child’s education, but I also want to teach them how to adapt to whatever life throws at them. I'm sure everyone is excited to return to campus in the fall and ready to start the new school year with their friends, in a structured learning environment, and feel supported more than ever. If there is one thing I learned through this historical pandemic is that teaching is much more than academics; it is teaching our students character, how to develop resilience, and how to be kind to others. We have our work cut out for us as we prepare your child for high school, and I feel confident we can achieve that together! I am looking forward to working with you and your 8th grader!

Our Middle School Mission:

To provide  a community experience, which encourages, challenges and supports our students.

Our goal is to infuse our students with rigor, to further promote intrinsic motivation, responsibility, autonomy, and students  who can confidently advocate and think for themselves.

What can I expect this year???

In an 8th grade classroom, we must build on the skills that our students have already been equipped with to prepare them for high school. The independence, responsibility, and balance required for the future is something that we must focus on this school year. The work load and time management is something to consider how your child works in and outside of the classroom. This year, both student and families will experience a shift in rigor, pacing, and responsibilities that are necessary for secondary learning.

Our Commitment

"We are committed to moving forward.  We will not make excuses or worry about what we “missed”  during pandemic education. We look forward to rebuilding and reimagining middle school for individual learners and our middle school community as a whole."

- Middle School Faculty

We (school staff and families) share the responsibility in creating a positive learning environment no matter where our students learn from. The most important thing we can do for our kids right now is to celebrate education and honor student learning.

I will always be here to help your child but I need YOU! Make sure to always check Parent Square for assignments, updates, and announcements. Communication is key!
