What is Ramadan?

“Importance of Ramadan – What Makes Ramadan Very Special?

1. Ramadan is the most precious month in the Islamic calendar (Hijri) and it is obligatory for the Muslims to fast in the month of Ramadan. Here are some interesting facts that shows the importance of Ramadan in Islam.
2. Holy Quran was first revealed in the month of Ramadan.
3. Fasting in the month of Ramadan is the fourth Pillar of Islam among the five.
4. Fasting helps to attain Taqwa (performing of actions which please Allah and abstaining from those actions that displease Him).
5. Ramadan is known to be the month of Quran. It is highly recommended in the Ramadan to read and study the Holy Quran and to share with others.
6. The Night of Decree or The Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr ) is in this month, which is better than a thousand months.
7. In this Holy month, the gates of Paradise are opened, gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained up.
8. Umra’h (shorter/minor pilgrimage) in Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj (major pilgrimage).
9. Muslims observe I’tikaaf (residing in the mosque for worship) in the Ramadan especially in the last 10 days of this Holy month.
10. It is very rewarding act in Ramadan to offer Iftaar (sunset meal to break fast) to those who are fasting.
11. It is also highly recommended to give Zakat (obligatory tax/donation – 2.5% of wealth/savings/assets) and Sadaqah (voluntary charity) in the Ramadaan.
12. It is said in an authentic Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that fasting in the Ramadan sincerely out of faith and in the hope of reward, we will be forgiven all our previous sins, provided the major sins are not committed.”

The Importance Of Ramadan For Muslims

“RAMADAN IN THE QURAN

• The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.

[Quran 2:185]

• Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.

[Quran 97:1-5]”

“HADITHS ABOUT THE RAMADAN

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:

“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward, he will be forgiven his previous sins.” ‘

[Sunan an-Nasa’i Book-22 Hadith-116]

Narrated Abu Huraira:

I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying regarding Ramadan, “Whoever prayed at night in it (the month of Ramadan) out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.”

[Sahih al-Bukhari Book-31 Hadith-1]

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.”

[Sahih al-Bukhari Book-30 Hadith-9]

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The five (daily) Salat (prayers), and from one Jumu’ah prayer to the (next) Jumu’ah prayer, and from Ramadan to Ramadan are expiations for the (sins) committed in between (their intervals); provided the major sins are not committed”.

[Sahih Muslim Book-1 Hadith-130]

Narrated `Aisha:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to practice I`tikaf in the last ten nights of Ramadan and used to say, “Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan.”

[Sahih al-Bukhari Book-32 Hadith-7]

Umm Ma’qil narrated that:

The Prophet said: “Umrah during Ramadan is equal to Hajj.”

[Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book-9 Hadith-132]

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said:

“The Messenger of Allah enjoined the Zakah of Ramadan on everyone, young and old, free and slave, male and female, a Sa of dates or a Sa of barley.”

[Sunan an-Nasa’i Book-23, Hadith-0]

Narrated `Aisha:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Whoever died and he ought to have fasted (the missed days of Ramadan) then his guardians must fast on his behalf.”

[Sahih al-Bukhari Book-30, Hadith-59]

Abu Ayub narrated that :

the Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan, then follows it with six from Shawwal, then that is (equal in reward) to fasting everyday.”

[Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book-8 Hadith-78]”

33 Blessings and Benefits of Ramadan Fasting: How many will you reap?

• The blessings and benefits of Ramadan Fasting are too many to be counted. If one does recognize them and realize their importance, he wishes to have the month of Ramadan to be throughout the whole year.
• These blessings are given by Allah to the fasting Muslims, who are to fast with full faith and expectation.
• These blessings and benefits of the month of fasting during Ramadan have been grouped and summarized into different categories. They are summarized here without commentary. It should be remembered that all of these blessings were taken directly from Holy Quran and Hadith.
• The following is a partial list for the blessings and benefits of Ramadan Fasting:

Taqwa

1. Fearing Allah (SWT)
2. Practicing the Revelations of Allah (SWT)
3. Accepting the little things that one has achieved
4. Preparing for departure from this world to the Hereafter
5. Self-discipline
6. Self-control
7. Self-restraint
8. Self-education
9. Self-evaluation

• By accepting these criteria and by practicing them, the Muslim will achieve the concept of Taqwa in his private and public life.

Protection

1. Avoiding Immorality
2. Avoiding anger/outcry/uproar
3. Avoiding stupidity
4. Avoiding all makrooh/mashbooh/haram

• By achieving these good manners, a Muslim will come out of fasting a better human being in the society.

Revelation of Holy Quran: The Holy Quran was revealed during the month of Ramadan. The Holy Quran is meant to be:

1. A Guidance to mankind
2. A Manifestation of right from wrong
3. A Summation and culmination of all previous revelations
4. A Glad-tiding to the believers
5. A Healer
6. A Mercy

Doors of heaven are open

Doors of hell are closed

Devils are chained down

Fasting with Iman (faith) and expectation: Such type of intention leads to forgiveness by Allah (SWT) to the individual's sins.

Door of Rayyan: There is in Paradise a door called Al-Rayyan. It is for the fasting Muslims. Only those who fasted the month of Ramadan are the ones to enjoy the bliss of Paradise inside that area.

Rejoices: There are two types of rejoices for the Muslims who fast. These are:

1. When breaking fast
2. When meeting Allah (SWT) on the day of Judgment

Mouth Smell: The smell of the mouth of the fasting Muslim will be better than the smell of musk during the day of Judgement. (Bad Breath)

Glad-Tidings: These glad-tidings are given to the well-wishers while the ill-wishers are to be stopped during fasting.

Ramadan -to- Ramadan: Whoever fasts two consecutive months of Ramadan with good intention will receive forgiveness for the mistakes committed throughout the year.

Multiplication of Rewards: Doing good = 10x, 70x, 700x or more during the month of Ramadan.

Feeding Others: Whoever invites others to break the fast, and whoever takes care of the hungry, needy, during the last ten days of Ramadan will receive equal rewards to the fasting person(s).

Blessing of Iftar: Dua is accepted by ALLAH (SWT) at Iftar time.

1. Blessings of Sahoor (The late night meal): This meal time gives the opportunity for:
2. Blessings of Sahoor and Iftar Night Prayers
3. Zikr, Remembrance, Contemplation
4. Recitation of Holy Quran
5. Fajr Salat in Jamaat
6. Dua of Fajr

Night Prayers: Whoever performs the Night prayers with sincerity and good intention will receive forgiveness of his past mistakes.

Shafa'at (Pleading One's Case for Forgiveness): Whoever fasts Ramadan will receive on the day of Judgement the Shafa'at of:

1. Ramadhan
2. Holy Quran

Ihya (Passing Nights Awake): Last ten days of Ramadan. When a Muslim makes this type of effort, he will get rewards, forgiveness, and multiples of blessings.

Itikaf (Retreat): A Muslim who performs Itikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan will get:

1. Blessings and rewards
2. Peace of mind
3. Contemplation and evaluation
4. Better citizen

Lailatul Qadr (The Night of Power): Whoever observes it with sincerity and good intention will get the following benefits:

1. Forgiveness of mistakes
2. Better than 1,000 months
3. Dua
4. Zikr
5. Prayers
6. Reading Holy Quran
7. Rewards
8. Blessings
9. Better human being

Generosity: Kindness, hospitality, visitation, etc. All of these and many more are among the benefits of Ramadan.

Zakat al-Fitrah (Charity on Eid Day): The benefits of paying such as charity to the needy are tremendous, among which are the following:

1. Purity
2. Feeding the needy
3. Sharing happiness
4. Improving human relations
5. Improving society

Sadaqah (Charity): The benefits of paying sadaqah are many. These are summarized as follows:

1. Purity
2. Flourishing of wealth
3. Improving economy
4. Circulation of wealth
5. Elimination of inflation
6. Elimination of poverty

Fasting and Health: By fasting, one gets the following benefits:

1. Sadaqah (Charity)Purification of body from toxins
2. Reducing of weight
3. Purity of brain
4. Rejuvenation of body
5. Living of life with happiness
6. Looking younger

Change of Lifestyle: By living a different life style, one gets rid of the monotony of life and hence enjoys his life span.

Sharing: Of hunger, thirst and rituals with others in the society.

Eid-ul-Fitr (Feast): Sharing of happiness and visitation of one another as members of the society.

Graveyards Visitation: One will get the following benefits by visiting graveyards.

1. Dua for the deceased
2. Preparing oneself for departure from this world
3. Feeling respect for the deceased
4. Making the person to be humble in his life

Every breath is Tasbih. Every breath and even sleep is Ibadah and awarded.

Umrah in Ramadan: Visiting Makkah during the fasting month of Ramadan is:

1. Equal to one Hajj (pilgrimage)
2. Equal to one Hajj with Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

Historical Successes and Victories in Ramadan: Muslims throughout their history received many benefits during Ramadan the month of fasting, among which are the following:

1. Battle of Badr
2. Battle of Khandaq
3. Opening of Makkah
4. Battle of Tabuk
5. Tariq Ibn Ziyad opened Europe
6. Salahuddin liberated Jerusalem from the crusaders
